How's it going? Still working on Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf?
You are off to China soon, right?

Hi Jimbo,
Thanks for the nudge, teammate! It's been a whole month since I have posted, and it has indeed been eventful,
though not in a language-related way: divorce papers filed, mediation regarding finances and custody almost
completed, a new house on the way to being bought. Daughter traumatized and very needy. I am reeling from it
all, and barely able to remember how to say "Ni Hao."
And, yes, leaving for China in less than two weeks! So maybe I'll try to post as often as possible between now
and then to report on my progress. If I could get back into a program of an hour of Chinese per day, I could
reactivate my knowledge a bit before our immersion experience.
Please, anyone who's reading this, send your positive thoughts, prayers, and/or advice my way!
Li Fei

Hi Li Fei,
Sorry to hear that. You know, for me when I'm studying Cantonese, I don't think about much else. I put all my efforts and concentration on it. I hope you can do the same with Mandarin.
I wish you the best with your studies and hope all works out with your life.

Sounds like you have a lot on your plate.
An hour a day for two weeks as a review will go a long way. 加油! 加油 !

I can't believe it, but we are off to China at 7 a.m. tomorrow! Wish me luck in my language immersion camp
after a couple of emotionally-draining months during whichI have studied only sporadically. I can only
hope that some of my hours of Pimsleur will pop into my brain at the right time!

I agree! And it sounds like the perfect opportunity for some fresh perspective. I love getting away just so I can come back refreshed and recharged. bon voyage!

A quick update from Chengdu, Sichuan Province. We have been having a fantastic time here in China and,
I can say with amazement, I have used my Mandarin so much! All those useful touristy phrases I learned,
plus more specific sentences related to meeting orphanage people and my daughter's adoption. It is just
sentences and questions I'm saying, nothing thoughtful or in-depth; and as far as listening comprehension,
it's just words, not even whole sentences. (Especially now that we're in the Sichuan Province--Beijing
Mandarin was much more understandable.)
But I am so much more comfortable here in China than I was the last time, simply because I know enough
to ask simple questions and get help. Every time my Mandarin works, I'm shocked and pleased. Plus,
among my travel-mates (Americans and Canadians), people turned to me for help when they needed to
speak to someone who didn't speak English. Wow, what a self-esteem-builder.
At the same time, I'm aware that I am a beginner with so far to go. It would be wonderful to be able to have
actual conversations about something more than the weather or food. I can't read enough to get by--that's
an area I need to work on so I can at least recognize some signs and labels.
Many of the people I've met have been so kind and encouraging of my efforts, and I'm very grateful for that.
On to Guangzhou tomorrow for a couple of days, then home. With new motivation; maybe I'll really do that
six-weeks challenge in August, just to give myself a good boost after my trip. Oh, yeah, and then I also
have to move and start a new semester . . . so we'll see.
