Writing the HSK sounds exciting! There is one in my city, but I'd have to make the arrangements when I return
home. I'll check it out and let you know if I could possibly write it.

Ouch! I just did a baseline online proficiency test in Mandarin at Transparent.com
(http://www.transparent.com/language-resources/tests.html); thanks to Jeff Lindqvist for the link. I scored 47%, 70
out of 150. Their kind assessment was "you are just starting out." So true, and in fact, I was proud to get as many
right as I did! But what a terrible score. It shows how far I have to go if I'm to reach B1 in 2011.
The good news is that I finished Pimsleur Unit 30 today, and so reached a 2010 goal. I also scheduled a meeting
with a tutor for next week. Onward!

Pimsleur Unit 30! Completing a 2010 goal AND making it to the end of a Pimsleur program,
must be a great feeling. I'm sure I'm not the only one around here hoping that Whitefish
decides to take on the HSK with you, sure would make for some interesting logs!

Ha--taking the HSK would result in some very anxious logs from me, I'm sure . . . which is why I hope that
Whitefish will join me. Jimbo, our other teammate, expressed interest somewhere in taking a proficiency test, I
think. It would be great if we could all take them and report our gains.
I've reached Assimil Lesson 12 and have started typing out the dialogues to force myself to pay close attention to
the characters. That also gives me a transcript with no pinyin that I can use to practice my reading . . . lots of
nice, conversational practice sentences to memorize too.
I did decide to do Pimsleur 2, for two reasons. One is that Irrationale, my forum hero for learning Mandarin fast,
started with Pimsleur. The second reason is that Pimsleur is a good way to study when I am driving, folding
laundry, or exercising . . . time that would otherwise be wasted. So I'm not going to obsess about it as a main
part of my program, but rather use it to fill in as I need/want to. One bad thing is that I can't find a transcript for
Pimsleur 2 (does anyone know of one?) so I just have to listen a little more closely and then try to find the
vocabulary via the pinyin to add into my SRS. It might sound pitiful to some that I need to use an SRS to learn
Pimsleur's limited vocab, but I am more of a visual learner, so it helps if I see the character, pinyin, and English
translation a few times.
So far (day 2 of 2011) I am keeping up with my goal of doing two hours of study per day. If I do that each day,
allowing for a few misses, I should reach my 750 hours for the year.

I'd like to take one for Cantonese later this year if there is one.
I'm trying to talk myself into taking the TOP for Mandarin but not really interested for some reason.
I would REALLY like to take the Kanji kentei.

Jimbo, I hope you will find a Cantonese proficiency test to take. Wouldn't it be great if we could all post proven
improvements by the end of 2011! Go, Team 唐! Now, that Kanji kentei looks truly insane . . .
Meanwhile, for my own studies:
Pimsleur II, Unit 3, twice. The first time through, I felt totally lost as usual, but the second time, it all made pretty
much sense. That's my usual pattern with Pimsleur. I get to 80% correct and then move on.
Assimil: Lesson 16. Listened a bunch of times, typed out the dialogue, read the notes. I am zipping along with a
lesson per day, so last night I ordered Volume 2.
Trainchinese (my SRS): learned some vocabulary.
I have been studying Mandarin since August 2010, so five months, 1-2 hours per day. I am in that place where
I've learned a lot, but am not yet able to have conversations or read. It's a bit frustrating, but I have to think that
if I keep steady at 2+ hours per day, I will make progress. And the good news is that I really enjoy those two
hours of study; it's not a chore. In fact, tending to the rest of my life--work, home tasks--is more of a chore
than the language learning.

Interesting! August 2010 is also when I began studying Persian, and that's exactly how I'm feeling with it too. It's frustrating that I know I've made considerable progress yet am still almost completely useless in the language. On the other hand, just keep your mind focused on how awesome it will be when you are in China next summer and are able to speak with the people in their own language. Good luck!

Pimsleur 2, Lesson 5;
Assimil Lesson 19
I have a five-day intensive class at work that will interfere with my mandarin studies. So my plan is to
review Pimsleur while commuting, listen to recent Assimil lessons with a glance at the book when possible,
and do 15 minutes or so of SRS vocabulary each day. I think a few days of review will be good
consolidation of learning, giving my brain some time to process all of this new material. Or so I hope!
