Notes at this juncture (7 December 2011)
As usual, I've been keeping assiduous track of my language studies – just not online. Terribly behind on posting to my log. Terribly sorry about that. University continues to be intense – whoever told me being a Masters student in Germany was easy must have been thinking of a different Germany. The main difference here from undergrad studies and education in the US is that the responsibility for everything lies squarely on the student's shoulders. If you don't come to class or don't do the homework, the professors honestly don't mind in the slightest. After all, it's not their problem! They just show up once a week to educate you to the best of their ability, and then test you on it all at the end of the semester (which, by the way, isn't until the end of January here). I'm accustomed to having more deadlines during the semester and less of a pile-up at the end – for instance, for several classes in the past, I've had to write and turn in a short essay every single week. Here, the equivalent is doing the translations. I have to translate about ten pages a week total, which isn't that bad, except that most of it is from English into German – the "wrong direction" for me. It's a very fun challenge, though. Today, for instance, in my "Vertragstext" (legal contract translations) class, I had to "live-translate" a paragraph without the help of a dictionary or online translator or anything, in front of the whole class of native Germans. At first I was terrified, but then it was rather thrilling! Luckily it was a short paragraph: "In case an assigned pilot is incapable to work due to illness or accident for a period of more than 19 calendar days, XXX shall be relieved from the payment of the employee assignment fee from the 20th day onwards for each further day of the pilot's incapacity to work. XXX shall not be entitled to claim replacement or exchange of the pilot in such case." If anyone's interested in my German version of that, it's as follows: "Falls ein eingesetzer Pilot auf Grund von Krankheit oder Unfall für einen Zeitraum von mehr als 19 Kalendertagen arbeitsunfähig ist, ist XXX von der Zahlung der Arbeitnehmerüberlassungsgebühr ab dem. 20. Tag für jeden weiteren Tag der Arbeitsunfähigkeit des Piloten befreit. In einem solchen Fall hat XXX kein Anrecht darauf, Ersatz oder Austausch des Piloten zu fordern." My professor was quite pleased with my spur-of-the-moment attempt, which made me happy. :) In other news, I have a job! I got hired as a freelance translator for a language-learning website called "Lingo4you". Their purpose is to assist students who are struggling in language class by explaining the grammar and general rules of a language as simply as possible. The site is currently available in German, with partially completed sections explaining English, Spanish, and French. My job is to translate the entire website into English. I can work from home and I get paid well, considering it's a part-time job, so I'm extraordinarily pleased with this development. Today, in between classes, I had an extra hour. So of course I went to my favorite bookstore and started reading a novel in Italian. It's called "Io non ho paura" (I'm Not Scared) and the author is Niccolò Ammaniti. It's atmospheric, accessible, and very visual – a thoroughly enjoyable read so far. It's both pleasant and depressing to be reminded how easy it is for me to read Italian. I can just pick up a novel and enjoy it after having self-studied the language for a (patchy at best) year, several years ago; while many German novels still intimidate me after four years of intense study.
