I had my German student yesterday. I get a lot of information about the French language when I listen to him describe the problems he has understanding his French colleagues. He works on the border and the business/common language of the company is Engl. Being German, he has a hard time understanding the French when they speak Eng. I can only imagine what it must be like, having ears accustomed to the sharp consonants and hard sounds of the German language and having to hear a language that is so soft with tones that don't exist in Eng. or German. It must sound so nondescript. In all fairness to French, my student doesn't have much of an ear for languages. I myself would love to be in his shoes, working in such a mixed environment -- nothing but different European languages floating around in the air -- heaven! Alas, I have to live vicariously and listen to him talk about it.
I wont be working on the musical aspect of the language today (listening) I'm still doing the logic part. I've done quite a bit of work on the tenses. Last weekend I started with a Lernkartei/flashcards which I'd bought from Amazon.de when I couldn't go on the computer: 1000 Grammatik Übungen. I did cards 1-35 last weekend and got stuck on the tenses and had to stop. So that's why, starting with my three-day weekend, I've started some intense study of all the tenses. I've spent 2 hours doing conjugations this morning. I cover up a table out of my Bescherelle book, 
and I try to see how many I can conjugate before I make a mistake. I've picked up a few of the rules since yesterday so it's not such a mystery how to build these verbs in their various tenses -- taking the stem of the 3P Plural form and adding the subjonctif endings to create the subjonctif. Or taking the futur form and adding the imparfait endings to make the conditionnel. People probably think I'm nuts for saying so, but it's kinda fun. After quizzing myself on conjugations I was able to go back to cards 28-42 and do some of the mixed tenses excercises. It wasn't easy, because I don't know all the rules for using the tenses yet, but I was able to properly conjugate from the infinitiv for sentences like this (plus-que-parfait ou passé composé): Le manifestants s'étaient réuni sur la place de la mairie lorsque la sirène a retenti --which made me -really- happy. That means I can push myself into the intermediate level using this little box of 1000 excercises (and of course referencing like mad to fill in the grammar-gaps) I'm going to take a break and go spend an hour with Kristin McGee and when I get back I'll start to work on Passiv... I just did cards 42-53: A warning, the passiv sentences from this set of cards are really dull... the dnf-Verlag is to blame. L'intérim est assuré par le deuxième adjoint La production annuelle de fruits et légumes est estimé à plus de 300 000 tonnes Ce quartier en construction est envahi par les broussailles I ran this through the translator (Reverso-Traduction) and I got "This district under construction is invaded by bushes" nothing like a bad translation to liven up one's studies! Imparfait was better. I could actually imagine myself using one of them in real life Dans les ports de l'ouest l'activité était arrêtée La conférence était dirigée par le doyen du conseil L'ascenseur était bloqué I'll never hear myself using the ones for passe simple; but it's good to recognize it: La statue fut commandée au sculpteur Cartelier Un reportage fut montré à la télévision After doing the cards for passé composé, futur, conditionnel, I was all passiv-ed out. I feel -incredibly indebted- to my study of the German passive. Having learned it has prepared me for French. il était regardé, he was seen, er wurde gesehen -- Done! Watch out, Sunja's grammar freak session continues
1000 Grammatik Übungen Cards: 53-74, indirect speech. So these cards aren't as much fun. I never liked studying indirect speech, seems a waste. But it will help to keep me from stumbling later on. I'm sure of that. I had to memorize a few words for the Zeit u. Ortsangabe -- um, what is that anyway? *google* "time and place expression changes" yeah, not much fun. Not my favourite grammar topic. The next topic should be better. Si-clauses, Les proposition conditionnelles! oo, I love those. It's just like Eng! As soon as I'm finished being a grammar freak I'm going to work on reading. I've returned my Assimil#2 back to the store -- I decided to wait on it -- and I got an abo for Revue de la Presse instead. It was muuuuch cheaper than Assimil. 1000 Grammatik Übungen...74-82, si-clauses. Ouch, these got tough. I did okay on Typ 1-2, but Typ 3 was hard. Conditionnel passé is completely new and I had a little trouble with the conjugations. The exercises were excellent, though. There were a lot of reflexive verbs and so I had to think twice on the auxiliary (être ou avoir). I'll need to repeat all this stuff in about a week. This is the first time I've done it. I had to run a few sentences through the translator since there were a few words that I didn't know..
La situation se serait aggravée si nous n'avions pas pris les mesures nécessaires. Nope. I didn't finish subjonctif. Now I have to put it off.
This week is looking really bad for French. It's short and there's a ton of stuff going on with my kids because there's only three weeks left: field trips, class parties and stuff. The reason I'm logging in is to commit myself to a plan. It's the It's logistically impossible to do French this week but I'm gonna squeeze it in anyway-plan. I grabbed my Assimil book and read about 2 minutes out of it 2X today. The main thing is to interject bits of French as many times into the day as I can. I tried conjugating a verb, but reading takes even less time, so I'm pushing grammar completely aside for now and I'll concentrate on reading small sections of various texts. The more varied the better. Tout est sous contrôle is pretty memorable. I got my password to the Audio-mp3 subscription with Revue de la Presse. Das stimmt. Ich wohne etwas weiter weg, aber es gab auch in Hessen ein paar Krankheitsfälle. Ich leide auch darunter, bin eine kleine Salatfresserin ;). Wir versuchen mit leckeren Stir-fries die schlimme Zeiten zu überstehen. Da kann man ruhig mit verschiedenen Salatarten experimentieren bzw. kochen. Ich habe Endivien noch nicht probiert aber das wollte ich dieser Woche noch machen, sobald ich mir den Salat hole. Hier ein Stir-Fry, das ich diese Woche schon gegessen habe: 1. 2 EL Kürbiskerne 1-2 min in einer Wok mit etwas Öl 2. Kürbiskerne rausnehmen, karotten julienne + Brokolli ein paar min im heißen Öl kochen 3. etwas Gemüsebrühe zugiessen, ein paar min weiter kochen. Spinat und Endivien (vielleicht auch Romaine?) kann man im Wok kochen. Wenn die "Knäckigkeit" fehlt, füge ich Nüsse hinzu (cashews oder pinienkernen). ich habe übrigens diesen Tips vom hr1-(Radiokoch) Meikel Pedrana abgehört. (Leider habe ich seine Tips nicht wieder finden können) Ja es ist alles zum heulen. Zum Glück ist der Höhepunkt dieser Krankheit vorbei, aber man ist trotzdem sehr, sehr verunsichert. Wahrscheinlich werden sie den Verursacher nie finden. Fleisch war immer generell das Problem (Salmonella) aber jetzt sind es ausgerechnet die Gemüse. Etwas müssen wir doch essen. Tomaten mag ich nicht so gern. Sprossen kommen mir sowieso nicht auf den Teller. Von Gurken lasse ich den Finger auch weg. na ja, man weiss es nicht. Morgen könnte es noch mal von vorne "xxx -gemüse ist Schuld" sein aber wie gesagt. wir sind momentan sehr kreativ und kochen einfach alles. Schade, ich vermisse mein Rucola! An update this week on my It's logistically impossible to do French this week but I'm gonna squeeze it in anyway-PLAN:
Yesterday wasn't bad. I drove my 4-yr-old to her Sprachförderung, and instead of driving back home I went into the forest with my Assimil book and did some Arguelles-inspired shadowing. I alternated excercise with shadowing and got a great workout. Luckily nobody was around at the time.. That afternoon I was tired and although I'd thought about it, I didn't pick up the book again. That night I read for about 40 min, Tout est sous contrôle. I'm into Chapter 2. That's not saying much. I've reached Chapter 2 in almost all of the other 5 books I'm reading in French. If I put all of those chapter 2s together it would make a complete book read in French! -- albiet not a very good one. Today I picked another section out of Assimil and read it. Then listened to it. Read some again. I'm about to take my daughter to her 4th class "Abschiedsfest" and we're all supposed to stand outside and grill food and watch the kids perform a theatrestück. So I have to go pack the car. I'll try to pick up my book --- let's say three times between now and tonight? I'll see how I do.
