Sometimes I read into the other chapters of Using French and I'm very pleased that I already know many expressions. Nulle part, roulait mal, I've learned from my other reading and DVDs.

I try to go out and shadow 15 minutes if I'm not too tired. It's easy to pronounce the pieces of phrases and places repeated from the first Assimil like Quatier Latin effortless thanks to previous lessons. I guess memorizing those lessons was a good thing after all! Assimil was right. I probably should not have quit assimil with ease!. I think I got tired of the amount of vocabulary. I was never able to do the Activation Phase unless I memorized it. I guess that's what you're supposed to do....

Now that I know a little bit more I can translate from Eng. to French after just a few intense passes of each chapter. I mess up sometimes but I learn faster than I did by the first Assimil.

ever since I've gotten back I haven't been able to find the right groove! I'm always thinking, "okay, now I'm gonna sit down and do some French", and I never get to it. It's partly due to my summer schedule -- I worked 9:00-12:30 last week and basically I've been spending a lot of time trying to get everything ready for the new school year which starts Monday. I've also been working on my health a bit; trying to eat right and get more sleep.

Today I don't have to work and it's now almost 3:00. okay. I'm going to go lock myself in a room with my Using French book and force myself into it. I've been sooo preoccupied lately that I can't even translate a simple sentence in my head -- Regression! No! I'll ease back into Using French today, then my Revue de la Presse tomorrow and perhaps Anki, we'll see..

I've been wandering around lately, playing with the idea of learning Turkish. I plan to get started with it after Christmas but knowing me, I won't be able to wait that long and I'll get "Turc sans peine" as soon as I can scrape together 50 euros. If it weren't for my car's much needed break pads, I'd have it ordered already.

I'll just have to make do with the Internet!. And in order not to neglect my French, I've found this wonderful site Apprendre le Turc. It doesn't do me any good as far as Turkish is concerned -- I know absolutely nothing about the language, but it's fun to see the French and listen to the Turkish audio. Now why haven't I come across Quoi de neuf ? yet?! What a great phrase!

I've been nibbling at Using French lessons throughout the day. I usually start with the first lesson and try to translate from Eng-Fr. I can do that up to lesson 5. Then after lesson 5 I still tend to glance at the French too much while translating. I listen and repeat the cassette dialogs in the car. --- Rewind, repeat, rewind, repeat -- it's good that I drive an automatic!

I'm posting out of guilt today. I haven't been very productive. My daughter has started the new Mittelstufe at her school today and learning about all her new experiences with her classmates has been exciting. Her teacher is French, so.. hey, you never know, maybe I might get to speak some.

Again, I'm having a difficult time getting the ball rolling again since I took a break in July. I'm lucky if I pick up Using French once a day. There's a lot going on to distract me. School has started and it's hard to concentrate. I'm also dealing with some health issues. Things will settle down soon, I hope.

I've been totally pulled out of my language learning routine by these aggravating symptoms I've been having for the past month and a half. My state of health has suddenly taken center stage. My Assimil book has been following me around (faithfully) but I haven't felt like concentrating on it. It moves around from the car, to the kitchen, to he bedroom but it doesn't get opened. I've been to my general doctor and my obgyn. Nothing yet. I have to get through this next week and then I have another appointment. Hopefully I'll get an MRI. I much prefer going to a radiologist rather than an internist. (That's the last resort). I've never been to one and I don't enjoy the idea of going to one.

*blah* what a horrible month this has been. It started out well and just got worse from day to day. Yesterday I thought I was having a heart attack. Waiting at the bus stop to go get my car out of the shop I broke out in a sweat, chest pains, raging pulse, nausea. Went to the doctor and he checked my blood oxygen levels. Everything okay. he says it's the hormones. Isn't that lovely? I'm only forty. My heart couldn't be stronger and my blood pressure is okay, so that's a good piece of news. -- okay -- if I don't stop ranting about my health I'll have to wander over to another forum. I won't let myself get carried away (at least for today)

After taking it slow I felt better this morning. I actually opened my French book. I wrote down a few sentences and repeated them. Took 10 minutes. I'll do another 10 minutes now and again before bed. I'd like to manage doing that for the next few days, but tomorrow is another appointment. It will be hard to concentrate.

well, if it's not one thing it's another..

The electricity is working again. Actually it's only been off since this morning, but not having it has been yet another distraction away from French. I had to ask around the neighborhood and sure enough, one neightbor is having trouble with his electricity too. The electricians came out and one of them, a young man, was amazed at the condition of the "box" we call a circuit breaker (electrische Schaltung Haus-Straße). He said "Historischer Kasten!" -- I have to admit, it's pretty old. This house we're in was one of the first to be built in this already old town. The cellar alone is at least 100 years old. I said, "haven't the neighbors told you the cows used to own this property?" My humor didn't quite translate -- it never does. Fused and not amused, I guess.

My health is still being checked on, but I should have an answer to at least a part of the puzzle tomorrow morning. It could very well be that something is wrong with my thyroid/Schilddrüse. If so, that means I was misdiagnosed in August..... ach, no matter. There will be an answer for everything soon and then I can get a fix and get on with my life.

Work has slowed down, unfortunately. It's the beginning of the school year and there's not much of a demand for Englisch. Two of my courses have been canceled (for now). That means money will be tight the next 2 months (ARGH!) After the mid-term grades come out business should pick up again.

I have plenty of time to study, but I just haven't made much progress. I've been continually going over the same chapters. Funny, I'm helping my daughter learn her vocabulary for school (She can speak it but now she has to learn how to spell English) and I keep telling her all the good advice I've gotten through this wonderful forum for memorizing vocab -- now why can't I follow my own advice?? :)

I'll try to squeeze in 10 minutes right now.. here goes...

Hey, everything checks out with my thyroid. That's a good piece of news. "optimal" was the word the doctor used. So what's wrong with me....hmmm. Well, I have one last test on Friday, and it's not going to be any fun. I have a whole week to prepare for it, special diet and all. This is my last night to enjoy the comforts of eating rich foods before I go on a weekly fast. some people do this as a practice -- I'm not one of those people.

I really enjoyed the lesson that I had with my student today. I always enjoy it when I get to hear Platt. I love Platt. He was on the phone with his brother. He asked me if I understood anything. I told him I didn't relish listening in on personal converstations but that I couldn't help myself. I understood, ach daisch di noch mal sehe. (that was a quote from the mother, not his brother-- ah, no matter.) I sometimes have a hard time with the sounds, being so similar, "daisch" and "aisch" but it's partly understandable.
