Сегодния я занимаюсь русскый язык. Утром чуть-чуть смотрела "Supernatural" в русски но я не много понила. Тоже слушала 19ый, 20ый и 21ый урокии из курса Принстон, а патом играла на гитаре. Училась песни " smoke on the water" и "Smells like teen spirit". Днём надо ехать в университет и заниматсья но можно учить рисски на поезде скнигой "Я говорю-по русски". Today shoul be a Russian day, but I procrastinated a lot this morning as as it so happened, some of it was in Spanish (which is a good thing to an extent, because it means Spanish is slowly becoming one of my "natural" languages, that I actually look for information for the sake of information in it. I read a bit of "El Paìs" and then watched the trailer of the documentary "Sueños de Haitì", as well as an interview of the director, which was kind of fun because the presenters spoke Valencian (a dialect of Catalan) and the guy answered in Castellan (AKA main-stream "Spanish"). It was kind of hard to understand the presenters but if I sort of stopped focusing too much on words, I got the global gist of what the main speaker was saying. Anyway, it's kind of strange but it goes to show that people do manage to speak to each others that way. It reminds me of how once someone had said that in few hours of study (something like 200 plus a little practice) it would be possible for every European to understand, like, all European languages (at the time it meant Latin and Germanic languages as it was before all the new Eastern countries got into the Union. Still not bad though) and everyone would just speak to each other in their native tongues. I thought that would be kinda cool... Of course Valencian and Castellan are way closer than, say, Portuguese and Swedish...
Yesterday I read about 50 pages of "La Guerra del Fin del Mundo" and I got "Sé o Sepa", which seems good for conjugations, but doesn't include rules for the use of tenses. I mostly know those thanks to reading, but still it would have been reassuring to have exercises pertaining to use as well as simple conjugation. Thanks guys! Alexander, I didn't finish learning to play those songs, so can I use быучить anyway? Or заниматся maybe? Is there a word for "practice"?
Also, I'd never seen the word "также"; what's the difference with "тоже"? Why is there a к in "во время поэздKи"? Finally, is "помощь" one of those feminin -ь nouns that have special declensions? In which case I understand the ending. I didn't have it in my list of those nouns, I only knew the corresponding verb. WEEK 4 REPORT
As I've posted a bit more this week, this is going to be quick: Russian: four hours of "Я говорю по-русски": I reviewed lessons 1-8 of the second book (it advertises itself as intermediary, but I think as far as actual capacity to express yourself goes it's still beginner level, at least the first part, although it does cover the big grammar rules. That's it, I still haven't gotten around to doing any Princeton. Once I'm done with reviews, I might just keep on learning the Princeton courses, but in a slightly more passive way, going over each lesson quicker. As for reviewing it I don't think it's necessary as I'm already reviewing the book. I was thinking of the grammar material that most people here use and how little I study grammar in comparison. Then I thought, well I learned English that way, and my English is OK, so maybe I should try it with Russian. So as soon as I'm done with reviews, I'll devote much more of my time to reading in Russian with "Sarah's story" from the Princeton course and "Histoires faciles à lire -- Russe" (Orphys), which I bought recent-ishly. It might be deadly for my accent, but I figure I'll pick that up again once I get to a good enough level to watch things. And there are recordings of the story in the Princeton course, so I'll still get some listening time. This week: 4 hours Total: 12 hours Spanish: I read about 90 pages of "La Guerra del fin del mundo", I wrote one post in this log in Spanish, and I watched a documentary on planned obsolescence, as well as short bits and pieces of other things (on Tunisia, Haiti...). I haven't started going into conjugaitions yet, but I got the book, so my active level should get a big boost very soon. I read some articles on the El Pais website, but mostly titles, which isn't a bad thing because it develops my scanning abilities. I can't wait till Aguila Roja comes back on though (I know, it's kind of a stupid show, but hey, it's listening practice and I like it. Here. I said it.) Friday -
So far this week I've only done a day's worth of Spanish (although that was a whole day, 7 hours, including like 6 hours to read 150 pages of "La guerra del fin del mundo"; So I'm good on reading for this week (I know, it's not that much, but they're big pages; at this rate I'll have finished the book in two or three weeks). I also did four pages of Sé o sepa?, on indicative present, really easy but I'm a completionist. So all I need to do this week-end is some listening. And two days of Russian, but in one of them I locked myself out and basically just bought a book (KAK II, seems good. I hesitated to get KAK I, but I didn't want to pay 13 euros to use only like a third of the book, so KAK II is above my level but if I start slow I think I should be able to catch up. The other one was okay, I'm now on lesson 14 of my Я говорю по-русски 2 reviews, and today I should start reviewing aspect (oh joy!). I also listened to the first three Sarah - Story parts in the Princeton course, and understood the first two (I think in the third one Sarah gets a letter from her best friend telling her the BFF is going out with her boyfriend, but I'm not sure and it's more guessing than actual understanding. I also tried to read three stories in "histoires faciles à lire", and though with the help of the vocab AND my good friend Wordreference I ended up undestanding, they're too hard for me to read without the Internet so I'll keep them for later. I'm going to listen some more Princeton today, then do maybe an hour's worth of Я говорю... and as much KAK. I'll see if I can really study more this week-end, but I doubt it as I have 1,000 words to translate for university, plus regular homework. And I haven't found time to practice playing the guitar... WEEK 5 REPORT
OK, I think I am finally back up to a good learning routine. This is good as I started this year's TAC very slowly, especially in Russian, and I was afraid I'd just not be motivated enough. I'm starting to see progress though so I'm feeling better about learning. And I've come to terms with the fact that a language like Russian can't be learned in a year, except in immersion. Russian: This has been a pretty good week for Russian. So far I'd been trying to find my marks, make up a study plan I could deal with, find some new material, but I think I'm pretty much set now. I'm going to study with three courses: - Я говорю по-рчсски for reviews and the essential grammar. - The Princeton course for oral comprehension/ casual vocab and pronunciation, as the other two courses are very, well, written. - And, the so-far missing piece to my language puzzle, KAK II, which is a comprehensive, highschool-like textbook which will probably give me more solid bases than either of the other two: Princeton is a bit fast and mostly drill-oriented (repeat a structure enough and it might just stick), Я говорю is good for review but doesn't let you really practice, either passively or actively. KAK requires you to actually think, infer, build things yourself. All three together are well-balanced (not sure I actually need Я говорю... so after I'm done with review I might put it aside for a while, then around the end of the year use it a review material. That should happen around Feb 10) Anyway, this has been a good week for Russian (not as intensive as at the beginning of the last TAC, when I'd sometimes do six hours in a day, and at least two every day, but I do also have a life, studies, friends to see, etc.) - I reviewed lessons 12-16 of Я говорю... 2, still have ten to go through before I hit the as yet unknown part. - I listened several time to the first three parts of Sarah-Story in the Princeton course, as well as all of Chapter 3. I'm really going through that quickly, as I think trying to re-learn actively all the vocab would be counter-productive: better to wait to encounter it again in other circustances. - I read and now understand the first text in KAK, and I didthe first two pages of the Лексика seccion. For vocab I'm between passive and active knowledge right now, I'm going to select words I want to know actively and learn those, leaving the rest to stay passive for a while. About the lesson I have a couple of questions for more advanced people: 1) Would you say преподавания is a synonym of образование, and if not, then what is the difference? My guess is the first refers to the actual action of teaching, whereas the other is more general and abstract (the school system, education in general), but I'm not sure. 2)I've seen the words семилетний and четырнадцатилетний (7-year old, 14 year-old), and I was wondering if for ages ending in 1, 2, 3, and 4 Russians use лет to build the adjective, or год for 1-year old and года for ages 2 through 4, as when you actually tell someone your age? Cпасибо! This week: 7 hours Total: 19 hours Spanish: I read 150 pages of "La Guerra del fin del mundo', only looking up a few words, which I really enjoyed. I also did a bit of very easy conjugation (see above), and watched two episodes of Redes, which is now very easy for me to understand. I should start watching the new or interviews more, and I wanted to today, but I ended up doing other things. Not a bad week either. My trip to Spain is mostly finalized: I'll go for 5 days, with my husband, to Madrid and Toledo. It's not as long as I'd hoped but it's Castilla so languagewise it's quite as good. We should be going in late March. Looking forward to it! I called a guesthoise though and my phone skill are terrible :'(. Hope the trip will change that, at least to an extent! And If I can't speak on the phone but am fluent with flesh and blood people, I'll be happy. This week: 8 hours Total: 24 hours Well, if I keep on like this month I'll end up with 240 hours more of study in each language, which isn't half bad. To all my teammates: Go team Я!
