have you tried Pimsleur Hindi Courses?
i have the cd wondering if i should dedicate my time on it ?
or start with teach yourself basic hindi .
i so wish michel thomas had done Michel Thomas for Hindi ::P
i come from south India(Chennai) ,where Hindi is not very popular .
but i am ashamed that i don't know my national language .
i can understand Hindi to extent as i watch lot of Bollywood movies ,but i cannot talk
.
i want to start with some audio course and then switch on to ASSIMIL ohne muhe ( i
just about to finish the Assimil German with ease).
till what level does start teach yourself basic hindi cover ? |

The Hindi on the Pimsleur CD's is very formal. But it isn't a bad introduction, and it won't really take all that much time. Teach Yourself Beginner's Hindi is fantastic; I recommend it without reservation. If you can get it, TY Hindi Conversation is very good as well. None of these take you as far as TY Hindi, of course, but it is a difficult course to complete without other tools as well.

All three are part of the same series by the same author, Rupert Snell. TY Hindi is the original, and a good book, but with a very steep learning curve. TY Beginner's Hindi is a textbook that takes things a bit slower, with more different types of practice. TY Hindi Conversation is an all-audio programme with 3 CD's.
All three work together quite well, without some overlap, but each one has its own emphases.
My Hindi is stuck firmly in intermediate. Unfortunately, I don't get much practice, but I read from bbc.com/hindi from time to time.
EDIT: how to use the 3 TY sets together.
1. Start with TY Beginner's Hindi, and make sure you learn to read and write. There are websites which help.
2. When you're on about chapter 5 of TYBH, start doing lessons from TYH Conversation.
3. Upon completing them both, start TY Hindi. Make sure you use the vocabulary podcasts from the Hindi-Urdu flagship website.
4. At first TY Hindi will be easy, but it will get tough after a while. Whenever you feel stuck, go back and review TYH Conversation.

Actually they cancelled it but didn't bother cleaning up their advertising.

Are you sure? It says the starter course is available here and the complete course is available here for pre-order. Both, by Akshay Bakaya, will be available on June 24th.

I have been following this for a while. When they first had the release date for last year, they told us on facebook that it would be pushed up until June, 2012. The dates on amazon don't mean anything, as they've been changed several times. When we post on the official facebook group asking if it is going to be released, we never get an answer. Has anyone been able to get official verification of the status of the course?
Edit: This just in from the MT official facebook page:
Dear All, We are currently reviewing publishing an MT Hindi in the near future, the earliest it would publish would be next year. We will keep you updated as soon as we have more definite news on a pub date.
Doesn't look good. This is the third time the date has been pushed back. I suppose I'll post in this thread again a year from now and we'll have a release date of 2062. :P
