The 6 Week Challenge in May, the first one with the ability to compare yourself in real
time with other participants, went really well. I've been asked to organize another
such challenge ASAP. As a lot of forum members may want to participate in the
Tadoku Challenge ("Read more or die") in July,
I've set August 1st as the start date of the next 6 Week Challenge.
We had Spanish as a focus language in May, meaning that participants were encouraged to
study Spanish (but did not have to; in fact the two top scorers studied Arabic and
Thai). Having such a large group studying Spanish means that there were more people to
exchange ideas, resources and day-to-day motivation. August's focus language has not
been decided yet. If you are going to participate in the challenge, please fill out
this quick poll and indicate which
languages you might be ready to study, if they were chosen. Indicate all languages, not
just your favorite, so that the end result is more likely to match your preferences.
I will post an update here when the bot is ready to take sign-ups. As before, it is
also possible to participate in the 6 Week Challenge without using the bot to keep
track, but believe me when I say that it's more fun with the bot. Also, you'll study
more, having this peer pressure and friendly competition on you.
The 6 Week Challenge Manifest
Make a difference! Your main target language must be one that you don't know
well yet, Lower Intermediate level at most. This way, you are able to achieve
noticeable progress in 6 weeks.
Anything goes! Use whatever methods you like. Experiment with a new method or
rely on trusty old ones. L-R, textbook, classes, Anki, reading books, watching target-
language TV, trolling target-language forums, whatever, we don't care as long as it
helps with your language-learning.
Get with it! You only have 6 weeks till the day of truth, forget about
procrastinating!
Intensify! Look at every spare minute and see if you can turn it into language-
studying time.
Cooperate! We are legion; the May 6 Week Challenge had 77 sign-ups. Draw
motivation from the group and share your tips and tricks and awesome trilingual
parallel texts with matching audiobooks.
= MAGIC formula for awesome results

I would love to improve my Persian or Russian in August. I really gained a lot from the challenge in May, and I'm
looking forward to participating again :)

I'm in for Portuguese (I've studied it part-time for two semesters, but although I already know some Spanish and therefore get Portuguese at a discount, I still wouldn't rate myself intermediate, no way) and/or Dutch (no experience at all, except extensive "reading" for a couple of months thanks to my German vocabulary).
Maybe I'll come up with something else, such as reviving Esperanto/Irish/Russian/that dreaded Mandarin....

Hi
I realise your chosen language for the May 6WC was Spanish, which for that reason (I suppose) has been removed from your list. However, I still intend to study exactly that language in August (as I just started it last week) ;-)
I hope I will not be excluded for that reason. :)

I'll probably do German regardless of what language is chosen... my boyfriend is starting it at school in the fall and
I want to be able to help with his homework, chat with him, and recommend good study methods to him. But he
also is interested in Mandarin so I may study that instead if it's picked.

I'm looking forward to participating in my first six week challenge. I have just started French, and that will be my language for the challenge. It's nice that the first 4 weeks will be during my holidays!

53 people have answered the poll now. We should have another 20 or so, if the challenge
attracts the same amount of people this time.
Top answers right now:
1. French (14)
2. Russian (12) / German (12)
3. Chinese (9) / Japanese (9)
4. Arabic (7) / Finnish (7) / Korean (7) / Norwegian (7)
