Welcome to the thread for TAC 2012's Team 德, a team for students and speakers of both
a Sinitic and a
Germanic language. Anyone
interested in joining the team can sign up in this thread. The only requirement to be a
member? Create an individual log and update it regularly. This thread will serve as a
place for members to share their goals, milestones, roadblocks, and musings throughout
the year.
For more about the TAC, check out the
official
thread.
As of 02 Feb. 2012, the team roster is:
B_Hutt: Dutch
Elsinore13: German & Mandarin
Hidden: German
jae: Mandarin & Portuguese
JimmyJameskun: Mandarin & Indonesian
Luna_Moonsilver: Mandarin, German, & Swahili
Magdalene: Mandarin, German, Spanish, & Vietnamese
Mepisevaerg: Spanish, German, & Mandarin (maybe French)
NickJS: Mandarin & either Russian, Norwegian, or Cantonese.
Serpent: German, Danish, & Dutch.
Silverpolyglot: Mandarin & Swedish.
WingSuet: Cantonese, Mandarin, & Spanish.
One last thing, a note on the team's name: the character 德 dé, "ethics,
morality, virtue," was chosen to represent both aspects of the team members' studied
languages, 德 being the first half of the Mandarin word for the (written) German
language, 德文, as well as an important concept in Chinese philosophy.
To all members: good luck! May this be our best TAC yet!

Nice post Magdalene,
I was going to make a longer post today but I've been quite busy with some car
problems.
Nonetheless I'm glad we have our team name together and such!
I should say now that my main focus for this challenge is definitely Mandarin and not
Norwegian, however I know I will be doing some at some point in the upcoming year for
fun - when I get the urge to, so I'll include it when I do.
We have to create our own separate TAC log soon if I'm correct? As I'd prefer to use a
new one rather than my older one - as my goals for the TAC are different (plus I
actually thought I'd lost that one at one stage lol!
We really need a "save favorite posts" function on here so I don't lose track.

Hey there! I've never taken part of a TAC challenge before, but I'm thinking of joining this year. I've been studying Cantonese for quite some time now and I'll be studying both Cantonese and Mandarin in Hong Kong from January to May 2012, so that's why I wanted to find a Chinese group. Swedish is my L1 and I know some German, although I don't know if I'll be studying it this year. Do I have to actively study a Germanic language or am I qualified anyway? Thanks!

I think this team is open to both really, I'm not studying German myself either, but I'm
studying Mandarin.
It would be nice to see some Cantonese as well as Mandarin too, so its fine by me if you
would like to join this team :P.

I'm fine with you being on our team and "just" studying Mandarin and Cantonese. I think
Team 德 is shaping up to be more of a team focused on Sinitic languages (with a heaping
scoop of Germanic ones on the side) anyway. :) Let us know if you decide to be a part of
our team for next year's TAC and I can add you to the roster.

Oh, great! I'd be happy to join! To start with I'll be studying Cantonese and Mandarin, maybe later I'll add another language (thinking of Thai or Finnish). Thanks!

How do you find studying both Mandarin and Cantonese at the same time, do you find you
get confused between them both?

Actually, I haven't started Mandarin yet, I will start with it in Hong Kong, so we'll see how it goes :) I've already studied Cantonese for a long time, so hopefully I won't mix them :)
