I would personally prefer that the group keep accepting members; there are some people
who have not yet
signed for any teams, and whom - as inspiring French learners and strong forum members
- I would be loathe
to turn away. If the Team as a whole keeps accepting members, but has an option for
folks to move into sub-
groups as they wish, that would be a win-win situation. One note: This year's TAC 2012
Romantics team had 25
eager members at the beginning of the year. Now, nearing year's end, only eight have
continued to update their
logs.

I think this is the best idea, as I said before, I wouldn't really want to turn people
away, and people who want sub-teams can have them, and others who are a little crazy
and want to read all of the logs can!

May I join the romance group? I've only learned of it today.

My name is Dearan and I'm 28 from Ireland but living in Seoul, South Korea.

My goal is to become a high B1- B2 speaker within the next year of studying French. Right
now I've spent the past month studying Pimsleur and Assimil NFWE. I'm firmly at the A1
stage. There is no reason for my to study other than a love of French, hopefully it will
continue through the year.

In the interest of finding a fair way of splitting the teams that doesn't hurt anyone's feelings, and in keeping with
my French theme, I propose we
Rochambeau for it.

In the interest of splitting the teams, I have started the Second Romance Team. I don't care how big the second group gets, but you will only be expected to read the logs of people you share a language with.

If anyone wants to be "in charge" of the second team, that would be great, but otherwise I will be the leader. I think it is wise to have someone with TAC experience helping make decisions.

Anyone who wants to join me on the other team is welcome, and all new recruits can be sent there as well.

I will probably still follow everyone on this team, and I wish you all the best of luck with your studies next year. :)

Now I'm a little confused. Is the first team already closed? Do we "have" to read all the logs of teammates in Romance 1, even if we are not learning the language? What's the difference between Romance 1 and 2? Is it simply a new team?

Thanks, Kerrie. I'd be delighted to be on the new team with you.

Yes FireViN, it is a new team. New people who want to join the Romance team will go on team #2. Anyone who likes the structure on team 2 (basically with the sub-teams I suggested) is also welcome to join that team instead.

The entire purpose of having a team for the total annihilation challenge is to support each other. You don't "have" to do anything, but if you want to be a part of the team, you are expected to read the logs of all your teammates. That's why we don't want super huge teams. The idea of a team is to support each other, and to get support from your teammates.

For all the newbies: you are not aware of the work involved in keeping up with 20+ logs at the beginning of the year. After the first 4-6 weeks, it usually slows down, but for the first few weeks of the year especially, it can be time-consuming.

That's the reason I suggested the sub-team approach, because there are quite a few people studying more than one Romance language, so making a French only team, or a Spanish only team would not fit a lot of the people who are here because they are studying Romance languages.

My proposal with Team Two is that everyone supports teammates who have similar goals. I don't follow people who study Chinese, because I have no interest in learning that language (right now), I don't understand their questions, comments, struggles, and triumphs. There are people on the Romance team that are only studying French, and have zero interest in Portuguese or Spanish. This way, they get support from (and give support to) the people who have the same goals as they do. This way, we can include people studying only one or two Romance languages, without excluding those who are interested in three or four of them, and vice versa.

When the poll was made for how everyone wanted to split the group, my idea wasn't even an option. So I started my own team, because I think it will be the best was to split a large group of people who have varying degrees of similarity in their studies. Anyone and everyone is welcome over there, but I felt like someone had to do something, because we kept talking about it and not doing anything about it.

Thanks Kerry for creating this new team.

Seeing that a Team Romance 2 has been created, I am strongly in favor of closing the inscription here and redirecting new people to Team Romance 2. I think it is urgent to do it before we are too numerous and we are unable to create a real team spirit and reading other logs becomes so time-consuming that it keeps us away from our own learning. However, I am really really uncomfortable with the idea of kicking-out people like songline and others who had already registered on either thread. So I voted option 2 but with that big reserve.

Also, because it might be too consuming at 1st to read 17-20 logs, I suggest that members only have to read the logs of people who study a language they study or speak. Basically, the sub-team thing but we also have to help people that are learning our native / fluent language. After the 1st few weeks, if we have less members or things slow down, we can go back to reading every log (or not, we don't have to take a decision about that right now).

As for Team Remus and Team Romulus, these would be good names but I don't think Team Romance 2 is interested in that.
