This is not as original as I would have liked, but here goes:
الأعور في وسط العميان ملك Among the blind, the one-eyed man is king. N.B.: the same in Portuguese: em terra de cegos, quem tem olho é rei. إنك تضرب في حديد بارد To strike cold iron. N.B.: the same in Portuguese: malhar em ferro frio. باب النجار مخَلَّع The carpenter's door is loose. N.B.: equivalent in Portuguese: casa de ferreiro, espeto de pau. البعيد عن العين بعيد عن القلب Those who are far from the eye are far from the heart. N.B.: the same in Portuguese: longe da vista, longe do coração. الحب أعمى Love is blind. N.B. the same in Portuguese: o amor é cego. Actually, I think this one is universal. For Sanskrit my task was both easier and tougher. It's a language that has inspired a lot of literature and philosophy but most of it has a deep religious meaning, which I believe to be too heavy in this context. I settled for the following one: विषादप्यमृतं ग्राह्यं अमेध्यादपि काञ्चनम्। अमित्रादपि सद्वृत्तं स्त्रीरत्नं दुष्कुलादपि॥ Accept elixir of life from poison, a piece of gold from an impure source. (Few words are sugar and no words are honey). Note: It was less easy as one may think to find hebrew proverbs online. You keep getting the biblical book of proverbs. It would be good to get direct translations of these as well. I quite liked the Greek
one you posted "Όποιος βιάζεται σκοντάφτει" (The one who hurries stumbles) I tried to find some Indonesian sayings that don't have direct translations that I know of: 1. Kepala boleh panas, tetapi hati harus tetap dingin. The head may be hot, but the heart must remain cold. = Stay calm in anger 2. Tak bisa menari dikatakan lantai yang berjungkit. (The one who) cannot dance will say that the floor is uneven. = If you're a bad language learner, you'll blame your materials for your lack of progress. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

Hello!
I know we're almost in April so it's (more than) a bit late to ask, but I'd like to be admitted to Team Rare's roster for TAC 2014. I've made learning Nahuatl (taking it from A0 to A2) my goal for this year; Luso read my log and suggested I ask if it's okay to join, so you could say he endorses my petition too. I know from experience that studying alone can be detrimental to one's motivation, which is why I'd like to be part of your team too. I'm still gathering resources while learning basic vocabulary at the same time (right now I'm focusing on numbers--I'm starting to grasp the logic behind them, but they're so long it's a tongue twister every time!). However, I think that by now I have enough material to keep myself busy while I'm not studying with my tutor. Speaking of off-class time, I'm currently on the warpath, so to speak. I use Lang-8 VERY often to practice languages, but I'd never noticed it's missing a lot of the so called "minor languages". After trying to get in touch with the staff with no results, I ended up starting a group on-site called "I want my language in Lang-8!", aimed at all those whose native language or language of study is not listed in Lang-8. I'd like to know what their criteria is for adding languages; for example, while I was trying to find out what the criteria was, I noticed that they do have Lojban (a conlang) listed and it has all of two speakers signed up, but they don't have Gilbertese listed in spite of having a LOT of members from Kiribati that want to learn English. I'm not completely sure this will bear any results, but I really want to try and open some more spaces in the internet for Nahuatl. 3 persons have voted this message useful |
