Welcome to my new log for 2014!

It looks like I’ll only be on one team this year – THE POLISH/UKRAINIAN TEAM. (Sokoły / Соколи) The team's motto is Razem tworzymy przyszłość / Творимо iсторiю разом The team's song is Hej, Sokoły / Гей, соколи My teammates – Chung, Serpent, Fuenf Katzen, Duan, Solfrid Cristin (observer), Amerykanka (observer), LinguistRick, QiuJP, sOfist, Stelingo (observer), t1234, vermillon Although I have other big language goals this year, I consider Ukrainian to be my main project. I haven't added a new permanent language to my selection for 3 years since Hungarian and I feel that it's the right time now that my Hungarian is stable enough. UKRAINIAN CURRENT LEVEL – Nothing TARGET – A2/B1 I’m going to Ukraine in July for about 10 days travelling and this is a massive motivation for me. I’ve also always wanted to know a language with the Cyrillic alphabet and there are many Ukrainians in the town where I live in the Czech Republic to practise with. My main resource will be the Teach Yourself Ukrainian course. I've been working on Ukrainian for a week so far and it feels like it really fits me. MY OTHER LANGUAGES CZECH CURRENT LEVEL – C1 TARGET – Improvement I’ve lived in the Czech Republic for 6 ½ years and have been very actively trying to improve my Czech that whole time. I’ve also passed both the B2 and C1 exams. My main weakness is my personality, as social skills are not my strong point even in English. As well as tons of TV, films, radio, magazines, books and general interaction, I also intend to learn by heart hundreds of complex sentence flash cards that I have created. SPANISH CURRENT LEVEL – B2 TARGET – Noticeable improvement and B2 exam in May. Last year and brushed up my Spanish and managed to get back to something approaching the level I had in 2009. My main targets are the B2 exam in May and the Polyglot Conference in June where I know I’ll get to use Spanish a lot. My resources are similar to my Czech ones plus a Teach Yourself Perfect Your Spanish course. HUNGARIAN CURRENT LEVEL – A2/B1 TARGET – B1 Hungarian is my favourite language in terms of the sound and the logic of it. I write a lot in Hungarian and speak (mainly to myself!) quite a bit too. I improved my listening last year. The Conference is a big motivation again and I intend to do at least one 6 week challenge in the language. TOKI PONA I know all of the 123 basic words in the language plus a few dozen more compound words. I can construct sentences in it and write well, but listening is very difficult because of the vagueness of the meanings. Again my big motivation for Toki Pona is the Polyglot Conference as the creator of the language will be there and will give a talk on it and I know that there’ll be a first opportunity to use the language in person. SLOVAK and POLISH My passive skills are obviously pretty good in Slovak and quite good in Polish, thanks to Czech and various spells studying both languages. I see both of them as fun languages, rather than permanent ones and I’ll try to improve through mainly passive exposure and noting things down and through reading the logs of my teammates. OTHERS With so many plans and not so much space in my brain, I think the languages I’ve written will be plenty, but wanderlust is always a possibility. Right now languages like Persian, Georgian or Basque attract me the most. I should also learn at least the basics of German too ready for Berlin. UPDATE
I spent Christmas in England and it really sapped my language learning motivation, as it always seems to for some reason. I watched a bunch of Czech fairytales on DVD and listened to some Spanish audio stories, but other than that I was pretty lazy. Since returning to the Czech Republic I´ve got back into my stride again. My focus has been on Czech, Ukrainian and Hungarian, but Slovak had a surprise boost. UKRAINIAN I´ve finished the first 2 chapters of my TY Ukrainian book. It still looks like some sort of code at first glance but I can now say that the Cyrillic alphabet is a lot more comfortable for me. I´ve done something every day since January 3rd. I´m pleasantly surprised but how many similarities there are in structure to Czech. The pronunciation seems easier than Polish so far and the personal pronouns are more similar to Czech than Polish. Other than that, as Chung told me, Ukrainian is a hybrid of Slovak, Polish and Russian and my knowledge of Czech, Slovak and Polish (and a little bit of Russian) has given me a massive headstart. The book is fine for me, but I don´t think it would be adequate for somebody starting their first Slavic language as it´s not intense enough. So first immpressions are positive and I´ve been excited to study it every day so far. OTHER The usual stuff in Czech and Hungarian - TV, films, socialising etc. in Czech, writing, speaking and a bit of study in Hungarian every day. I bought a box of 303 games to use in my classes and elsewhere and when I opened it I found out that all of the instructions for every single game are in Slovak. An update is long overdue here.
I've been working hard on Ukrainian, Hungarian and Czech since the new year started. I'm currently in the 6 week challenge and, apart from a 4 day break when I had visitors from England to entertain, I've been very consistent, which I've learned is the most important thing for me to be with languages. UKRAINIAN I've done at least 15 minutes of Ukrainian every day since the 3rd of January (apart from those 4 visitor days). I'm on chapter 6 of my TY book and am also about to finish my answers to Pesahson's questions on the team thread. So it's going well and I feel good about my progress, although obviously my active Ukrainian is still very weak. HUNGARIAN My biggest language fear right now is that Ukrainian will replace Hungarian in my brain, so to counter that I've been doing even more in Hungarian than in Ukrainian. At least 25-30 minutes a day I'd say. I've done the first 8 chapters of my LEDA Hungarian textbook since the start of February. CZECH The usual stuff. Lots of reading and watching TV and films and a fair bit of speaking. SPANISH I watched the Argentinian film 'Bombon', which was a nice film and I understood probably 60%, which I probably expected as my understanding of that dialect is a lot weaker than my understanding of Central American Spanish (Guatemala/Belize/Costa Rica) where I learned it or Castellano, which I've studied quite a lot. OTHER GOOD NEWS!! I've paid for my place at the Berlin Polyglot Conference and my place has been confirmed! I've very pleased about that, because I was afraid that there would be a massive rush for places and I'd miss out. Hopefully I'll be more relaxed and confident this time and able to enjoy it even more than last time. It's 4 full days this time, so it'll give me more time to get comfortable and I already know some of the people from last time a little bit so that should help too. The 6 week challenge has finished so it's a good time for an update.
After a 4 day period of doing very little when I had visitors here, in the last 24 days of the challenge I really went for it and only once in that time did I manage less than 2 hours of active language work in a day. At the start of that period I borrowed the book 'Cesta Sněžných Ptáků'from the library and it was so good that it contributed quite a lot to my times every day. My targets and successes were - 20 hours of Hungarian plus at least 15 minutes every day - I did nearly 21 hours and fulfilled the 15 minute plan too (apart from the 4 day break in the middle). 10 hours of Ukrainian plus something every day - Managed over 13 hours and did something every day. 10 hours of Spanish - I did nearly 13 hours and only worked on Spanish in the last 3 weeks of the challenge. 100 hours altogether - I did 126 hours altogether. So all targets met and I finished 7th in the overall league table, which was a nice bonus. I only started paying attention to the table in the last 2 weeks and it does add a little bit of extra motivation to fit in an extra 10 or 15 minutes here and there where otherwise I might not. This is how I award myself time - 1 hour of TV/Film = 30 minutes awarded to myself in the challenge. 2 hours of sport = 30 minutes awarded. 1 hour of reading = 50 minutes awarded. 1 hour of study or speaking = 45 minutes awarded. The reductions allow for time when nobody is speaking on TV or for lack of concentration on my part. NEW GOALS My new goals after finishing the challenge are - Spanish B2 exam on May 24th, which means that Spanish will now take on a lot more importance for the next 2 months or so. Before the next 6 week challenge starts and while the forum is still operational, I want to write a quick update, just to keep to my plan of at least one update a month.
UKRAINIAN It's been my main project for the last month or so and I've done at least something in it every day apart from one. I've finished the first 10 units of my TY Ukrainian book and have been studying the vocabulary from that course. The course is pretty mediocre but I'm making it work I think. I can now put sentences together and should be able to have conversations in it with people at the Berlin Polyglot Conference in June. EVERYTHING ELSE Most of my goals and focused around the Polyglot Conference and being on top form for that in Czech, Spanish, Hungarian, Ukrainian and Toki Pona. As such I've been doing bits and pieces in all of them and a hell of a lot of reading in Czech. In the 6 week challenge my targets are - UKRAINIAN (target language) 20 hours SPANISH 20 hours CZECH 50 hours HUNGARIAN 10 hours TOKI PONA 6 hours 1 person has voted this message useful | |

The end of May is fast approaching so an update is in order. I haven't been on HTLAL very much in May, mainly for the positive reason of giving most of my free time to languages. The Polyglot Gathering is in 2 1/2 weeks so I want to put as much preparation time as possible in before that time; I can't wait to get the opportunity to use all of my languages at the same time again for the first time since the conference in Budapest last year.
So with the conference in mind, I want to get to an adequate conversational level in Ukrainian so that I can practise that as much as possible, so I've been working really hard on that. At the last conference Spanish was a very popular and useful language so I've also been doing a lot in that, mainly watching films and speaking (to myself!). Obviously Czech is my strongest language and always my overriding priority so needless to say I've been using that several hours a day in both active and passive ways. I've been brushing up a little on my Toki Pona and am planning to step that up a little over the coming 2 weeks. I could even get the chance to speak to Richard Simcott in that. Due to all of these other bigger priorities, I've only been mildly maintaining Hungarian. However I hope to use that too in Berlin so maintenance is very important and I'm aiming to increase that before the conference. In the 6 week challenge I should reach my targets for Ukrainian, Spanish and Czech, but have had to reduce my expectations for Hungarian and Toki Pona.
