I have a question about Russian. I have heard that Lenin spoke Russian using an uvular trill ([R]) instead of an alveolar trill ([r]). How does that sound to Russians?

I couldn't comment on Lenin's pronunciation, though recordings of his voice exist, I believe. He may have had a slight Volga region accent, considering where he was born and raised. He grew up in a rather cultured middle-class family that would probably be called "upwardly mobile" today (technically he was in the Tsarist "service nobility" by virtue of his father's civil service rank), and he may have been taught to avoid pronunciation that was thought uneducated. On the other hand, in his later speeches he consciously avoided language that would go over the head of his listeners who were often illiterate or semi-literate. Whether he would alter hs pronunciation habits as well, I don't know. Certainly early editions of Pravda used simple Russian and limited vocabulary.
I would learn Russian first. There are far more materials in Russian, and knowledge of Russian would make later Ukrainian study significantly easier.
