(I hope this hasn't been posted before.)

I just found the Zompist collection of some of the weirdest phrases from actual phrasebooks, in both English and a phonetic approximation of the target language. Great entertainment value.

The same website also hosts its own French-Spanish-German phrasebook... to be taken with a grain of salt!

I often wonder who picks the sentences that are included in guidebook.

I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't include some examples from Making out in Arabic which is utterly useless, but definitely entertaining.
(The nomad out of time web site contains two sample pages, the second of which is very funny.)

Thanks for fixing the links, Doitsujin! That's what I get for trying to be cool and type HTML without using the link button. :)

I loved the story of the "Hungarian gentleman" – didn't know that one.

Sorry Jinx, I deleted my post with the youtube.com link as an advertisement seemed to
have inserted itself that did not seem appropriate - reposting now hopefully without the
unwanted advertisement.

Worst phrase book ever (and consequently a collector's item):
English as She is Spoke

Wikipedia article about the book (when Wikipedia English comes back up):

IMO, most likely:

Least likely:
Quote:
Hand me over those moccasins. -- They will not help you much, they are like a singed cat.
