DU: Het is heel begrijpelijk dat je wilt een paar buitenlandse boeken lezen en astronomie weer bespreken na de laatste dagen waar je een enorme werk hebben gedaan om de draden te bewegen in dit forum. Ik ben zelfs ongeduldig om opnieuw te beginnen met de praktische taal-studien, in plaats van alleen beschrijvingen van de methoden in het Engels te schrijfen. Ik heb ook een grote achterstand van mijn vakantie foto's en mijn vakantie beschrijving.
Danke je voor de punten. Ik hoop alleen dat ook andere leden sterren aan zich raken, met inbegrip van degenen die schreef in het forum in de kinderschoenen - het is een beetje ijselijk de enige te zijn die een lamp of kopje onder zijn naam heeft. Maar de mensen moeten waarschijnlijk wennen aan de nieuwe inrichting. ----------- I can understand that you want to read some French and communicate about astronomy after your monumental task moving threads in this forum. I have the same feeling: I have spent so much time writing in English about language learning the last couple of days that I can't wait to do some real language learning myself again. I also have a severe backlog with my holiday photos and travelogue, plus I have some 50 unread e-mails waiting for me from members of my travel clubs. Thanks for the votes in the new voting system. I hope the votes will get more evenly distributed (also to posts from the infancy of this forum) when the currently active members have learnt to use it, - it is somewhat intimidating to be the only one with a glorious lamp or cup glowing under his name. My physical workplace is a mess today because we are moving to a new location, so I have been at home the whole day. But my activities have only indirectly been related to language studies (bad, bad week this one!), - instead I have been ordering and retouching more than 200 photos (out of 500), and I have been writing a travelogue, but I still haven't had time to draw maps, and I still haven't integrated my photos and postcards into neither the travel diary or the geographical positioning system on my computer. So then I could have been watching foreign TV? Not really, because my cabel TV box didn't function when I returned from ALbania so now I hav got a new one, but I haven't had time to plug it in. At least I have been able to watch some programs from Norway and Sweden, but also at least one program in German from the Zoo in Berlin.

FR: Donc Iversen a beaucoup d'autres choses à faire que étudier et utiliser ses langues. C'est un peu dommage pour lui. Sur cette page je regarde plutôt les avatars que les textes, quelle distraction!
Aujourd'hui j'ai déjà lu la moitié de mon Easy Reader de Jules Verne. C'est assez facile. En version originale j'ai lu seulement "Le Petit Prince" comme livre litteraire, parce que lire les livres litteraires en français était sur mon niveau de langue. The log threads have a problem right now that makes it impossible (at least for me) to add to them or even to edit old posts, so until it has been fixed I'm going to write here - and when things work again I'll move the lot to my good ol' megalo-multiconfused log file. I know from my own ventures into the world of computer programming that strange things happen when ever you change a system, so after the initial shock I have decided to take this situation with total calm - our Administrator, who has been a very busy man since he returned to the forum, will certainly also know what to do about the present calamities.
As some members may have noticed I spent the first half of the week writing a wee list in five parts about my own preferred study methods. After that I have spent 1½ day on my photos and travel diaries from my 3-week tour through the Balkans (which also became a language learning venture), so I have only had very little time to do actual language study. [SW]: Men även i denna situation har jag lyckats titta lite grann på tv, inklusive på svenska televisionen. Jag har sett en entusiastisk kvinna undervisa en före detta idrottsstjärna i att göra potatismos med en potatispress, och hon tyckte även att resultatet var himla gott. Om det var jag som först fick slita ett kilo potatis itu med hjälp av en maskin och sedan äta snasket, då skulle jag gråta. När jag var i Tirana och åt tillsammans med ett dussin medlemmar av min resa klubb, ombads köket att sätta landets specialiteter på bordet efter eget val. Och där satt jag så och såg den ena sorts sallad efter den andra bli placerat på bordet, medan min tallrik som den enda förblev blek och orörd. Plötsligt börjar den ena läckra kjötträtt efter den andra att komma på bordet - men då hade de flesta av allätorna åtit sig mätta på grönsaker med dressing. Det var carnivorens tima efter att vegetarianerna hade haft deras. Det finns många härliga natur-program på svenska tv, och i morse såg jag en utsänding från Blekinge, som innefattade ett försök på att hitta ekoxar ('eghjort' på danska, Lucanus cervus). Det är en jättestor skalbagge ('bille' på danska) som lever i og på ekträd. Hanarna har enorma ('maffiga') käkar som liknar en hjorts horn, vilket förklarar det danska (och latinska) namn - det är slående att de danska och svenska språk har helt olika namn på många såna typer av kryp. --------- I spent the first half of the week writing my Guide in five parts to language learning. I remember from my trip to the Balkans that I was sitting in a restaurant with twenty other members of my travel club, and the kitchen had been ask to serve the specialities of the country after their own choice. And I sat there, watching one salad come unto the table after the other, while my plate stayed as shining white and virginal as the day it was delivered from the factory. Then suddenly one delicious meat course after the other arrived from the kitchen, but at that time the omnivores were already totally glutted. The vegetarians had had their golden hour, and now it was time for the carnivores. This morning I watched one of the excellent Swedish nature programs, and this time they were searching for stag-beetles, the 'national animal' of Blekinge Län, - it is a big beetle that lives on oak trees, and the name is due to the enormous jaws of the males which ressembles the antlers of a stag. [SW]: Just nu visas en en av de regelbundna sändningar på finska - men tacksamt nog med textning på svenska när det talas finska (och vice versa). Den första finska bibelöversättning gjordes 1548 av Michael Agricola, men under tiden i union med Sverige talade finska överklassen svenska, och det var först efter att Sverige var tvungen att lämna Finland til ryssarna att det kom til en en rörelse för att stödja det finska språket (trots att ryssarna förmodligen hade företrukket att se finländarna byta till ryska). Namnet Snellmant nämndes. Och idag är det svenska språket i Finland visst i kris utom på Åland ---- In this very moment they show one of their regular Finnish programs - but luckily with subtitles in either Finnish or Swedish (the opposite of the language that is spoken). They have told me about the first bible translation from 1548, about the Swedish speaking upperclass and about the Finnish language-movement that gained the upperhand during the years under Russian rule (until 1917). And they have even discussed how Finnish would have had it today if Swedish had continued in the role as upperclasse and administrative language in Finland. Hi Mr. Iversen
Forgive me if I'm out of line here, it's not my intention to bother you, I'm simply asking out of plain curiosity. Have you ever consider learning Finnish or Hungarian? I think those languages would be amongst the hit list of any polyglot with your language learning background. Or it would be that you are mainly focused on the Indo-european language family (with the exception of Tagalog, of course)? Regards 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

My Tagalog studies have been on hold for several months, partly because have have been busy with the Balkan languages, partly because my dictionaries were demonstrably too small. I have got a suggestion here for a better one and I intend to buy it, but haven't ordered it yet. As for Finnish and Hungarian (and Basque) I find them tempting, but I don't think it will be wise to start a whole new language group now. The sensible thing to do now for me is to focus on Slavic languages and in particular to spend more time on Russian. Then other tempting projects must wait*.

FR: D'ailleurs TV Monde célèbre son 25ième anniversaire ce soir. J'ai vu beaucoup de ses émissions, mais je n'ai jamais compris comment les personnes qui ont la responsabilité de la programmation de ce chaîne puissent avoir l'audace de proposer des programmes avec une durée de deux, trois minutes. J'ai parfois vu ces petit riens et parfois ils ont un thème interessant ou joli, mais est-ce que les TV5-iens croient en toute sincérité que je vais interrompre rien que ce soit pour regarder une émission d'une durée si ridicule? ------- When I had stopped moving threads around 14 o'clock, I watched a program about Stonehenge on the History Channel while reading the Latin version of "Astérix le Gaulois". Stonehenge has become a holy place for 'modern druides' and other adherents of new age movements, but insofar they believe that Stonehenge was made by the Celts under direction of their druids then they are mislead. At rare occasions there are minor excavations, and the latest one showed that the blue stones were carried there from a quarry in Wales 250 km away rather precisely 2300 AD - not 2600 as hitherto believed, and then the big sarsen stones were put there around 2100 AD. As for Asterix and his friend Obelix with his anachronistic penchant for menhirs, this book - one of two - was translated by a certain Redcastle, and it is said to be used by modern Latin teachers. Which is good, because there are very few surviving sources of original informal Latin so these translations are very welcome. TV5 Monde, the French international channel apparently celebrates its 25 years anniversary, and congratulations with that - I have seen many good programs there. But they have one particular habit: they announce absolutely miniscule programs with a length of 2-3 minuts. Do they in full earnest think that I will interrupt whatever I'm doing to see a program of that size? And finally I have been spending some minutes on Albanian, using the methods mentioned in the 5. part of my guide, i.e. I compare the Albanian and the English text of my Korça guide and try to understand the sentence structure and as many words as possible. However now I have one avantage compared with the situation in Tirana: I have come home to the English<-->Albanian dictionary I bought last year in Prishtina, without having any use for it at the time. If anybody is curious then it is the "Fjalor Shqip-Anglisht-Shqip" by Pavli Qesku, which all in all has 10.000 headwords, but 60.000 derivatives that in many other dictionaries would have been headwords in their own right. I saw bigger dictionaries in Tirana, but didn't have enough empty space in my luggage, and so far this one seems to be fairly good.
