EN: I have just watched two excellent science programs on the Danish TV station DR K - ansd it is typical that both were in English. The first was part 1 of a 5-part series about languages with Stephen Fry. He went quickly through some of the major questions in linguistics: the FOXp2 gene, a few words about Protoindoeuropean, references to sound laws and the brethren Grimm in Leipzig, wild children and the 'language learning window' and the chronology of language learning in children. I didn't really learn anything new, but it is positive to have such programs on TV. I just wonder how Fry can fill out four more programs with the speed he had in the first one.

The other program was one with Brian Cox, who described the development of the natural sciences from the best of the old Greek philosophers (exemplified by Aristarchos) through Galilei and Newton and Royal Society to the discovery of the Higgs particle at the CERN facility. Again I knew most of the things beforehand, except that Henry Cavendish walked around with a hat in a style that had been obsolete for 100 years. In that connection it might be relevant to mention that personality research on scientists had revealed that scientists on the average range midway between autists and mainstream citizens in a number of respects, including their ability to focus one something for a long time..

Sometimes Danish TV stations do show 'homegrown' programs about such themes, but it is typical that many of the best programs are on the local channels or on a channel called DK4, and unfortunately I can only get two of those (plus DK4) from my TV provider.

In Leipzig, wo J.S.

Felix did however arrange with her for some of her songs to be published under his name, three in his Op. 8 collection, and three more in his Op. 9. In 1842 this resulted in an embarrassing moment when Queen Victoria, receiving Felix at Buckingham Palace, expressed her intention of singing the composer her favourite of his songs, "Italien", which Mendelssohn confessed was by Fanny

OK, let's have a look at some language studies - or rather the absence thereof. I am 2/3 through the TY Oldenglish, which I started out reading one chapter at a time in the bus-back-from-work. This weekend I have visited my family, which normally bodes for drastically reduced study time (I simply don't understand how people who live with their family can find time to study!) - and that was also the case this time, but at least I had an hour or so to study Anglosaxon in the train in each direction.

I have now two fora to write in, and it's three days since I visited this thread - but only 7 logs have been active since Sunday. The musical rendering of this would have to be something like Thomas Tomkin's "A sad Pavan for these distracted times". Or maybe the ensemble who according to a spurious legend continued playing "Nearer my God to thee" while Titanic was sinking under their feet. The lady who claimed this had however left the ship 1 hour and 20 minutes earlier so she couldn't have any idea what the guys were playing.

I have been busy rereading Germanic and Romance sources from past and present times for the messages I have published in my log at 'the other forum', where I am telling about my language related paintings in the same way as I did here in July 2009 - though the paintings have since become invisible here because the server they were placed on was closed down a few years ago. But in spite of the Germanic-Romance bias this activity has led to I have also had time to read a few things for fun in other languages and to do wordlists in Greek and Indonesian.

Yesterday I worked through around 130 Indonesian words starting with g or h, from gombal (valueless) til hancur (smashed, crushed), and because I haven't dealt with Indonesian since my return from France/Belgium in August I did a first repetition round shortly after the initial round. This is something I have done before in cases where I felt my memory didn't readily catch the words on my list, and it doesn't remove the need for a repetition round today.

I have made one general layout change in my word lists: I have stopped drawing lines on the paper - now the colours are all that separates the columns. In this way I can write more on less space, and the weird thing is that I feel this actually makes it easier for me to memorize the words - as if the empty space somehow left a reflection in the form of empty spaces in my brain. But I still do the usual three columns in round one (target, base, target) and two in the repetition round (base, target). And 'base' in this case means Danish, even though my dictionary is the English-Indonesian one by Tuttle.

BA I: Ada beberapa pengamatan menarik tentang derivasi dalam bahasa Indonesia.

EN: Apart from that I continue my music cassette transfer project. And this takes me through a number of interesting, but little known composers. A few days ago I listened to music by the Argentian Ginastera, then a Danish composer named Glass, followed by several Russian composers with names that start with GL: Glazunov, Glière, Glinka (and the great master Ippolitov-Ivanov too, represented by his Caucasian Sketches), and right now I'm listening to French music from the 18. century - a tape dominated by François-Joseph Gossec, but also including "Les Symphonies du Festin Royal de Mgr. le Comte d'Artois" (19 minutes) by F.Francoeur. The downside of this is of course that I hear less foreign languages on TV and computer. For instance there is a program on French TV5 about the Indian national park Kaziranga, which is home to about two thirds of the remaining unicorn rhinos in the world. But I can't both listen to Gossec & Francoeur and to TV5.
