In the first part of part 1 we see some dinosaurs, but then the Chicxulub meteorite hits the Earth and then we get a flickering series of mammals and (big) birds from the Tertiary. However in the last third of this video we zoom in on a small cangaroo-like critter named Leptictidium from the Eocene, which is the second part of the Tertiary. I have for the first time in a long time actually heard some Indonesian. In the thread about rare languages I saw a reference to Unzum's list of materials for language learning, and there I saw a link to SBS radio (which I actually knew, but had forgotten). They have got videos in scores of languages, and I found several videos in Indonesian. I listened to the one about the fate of Indonesian studies at the Australian La Trobe university and made two positive and one negative observation: 1) the language sounded more or less as I expected it to sound, so my 'inner ear' isn't too far off, 2) I understood a lot of single words (maybe half) and could understand the syntactical structures, 3) (the negative one) I couldn't grasp the meaning on the fly. In several places, including part 5 of my "Guide to Learning Languages", I have written about the 'listen like a bloodhound' method, where you drop listening for the meaning and focus on distinguishing the words - which reminds me of a bloodhound following a trail with its nose close to the soil and oblivious to anything that happens around it. In such discussions I always promise that the meanings of known words will pop up by themselves, and at some point the proportion of known words will be so high that the general meaning also appear by itself in your mind. I'm not there yet with Indonesian, but it seems that I I'm getting fairly close - otherwise my first listening session for mayby three or four months would have been much more traumatic. Mi hodiaŭ vizitis librovendejo en Ennis kaj tie kompris kvar librojn - du librojn por junuloj en lingvo Irlanda,"Favorite Irish Legends in Irish and English" kaj "Leabhar Gramadai Gaeilge". La gramatico revelaciĝis esti tute en la lingvo Irlanda - bone, laŭ la titolo tia afero estis esperanda, sed estos problema por mi ĉar tial mi ankoraŭ ne povas meti la konfuzan gramatikon de "Teach yourself" en loko kie la suno neniam brilas. Do mi bezonas kompri alian gramatiko kiu estus vere bilingva, ekzemple la gramatiko de Collins kiun mi ankaŭ vidis hodiaŭ en la librovendejo. Sed alie la gramatiko tute-gaela ŝajnas esti tre bona kaj tre sistema, kaj mi rekonas multon de la enhavo. La legendoj rakontas pri la Tuatha de Danann, kiu laŭ la antikvaj tradicioj vivis en Irlando antaŭ la Keltoj kaj estis grandaj magiistoj. Mi ie suspektas ke mi jam skribis ion pri ci tiu popolo, sed no povis retrovi la referencon..
I have bought a number of books in and about Irish. One of these is actually an Irish grammar, and maybe I should have expected it from the title, but it turned out to be entirely in Irish Gaelic. So maybe I'll have to buy one more grammar before I can put my chaotic Teach Yourself Irish grammar with all its annoying exercises away. Apart from that, I have read the first couple of chapters and recognize a lot. The book is obviously written for bilingual Irishmen because there aren't any indications of pronunciation and sometimes, but not always, English translations and comparisons. So far I like the book, and it seems more systematic than the TY things which relegates some of the most important tables to appendices. The legend book is bilingual, and I have worked my way through the first page with the help of my Collins Pocket dictionary, which I like more and more. I bought it in London, and so far I don't feel I need more than this dictionary. The legends tell about the mythical Tuatha de Danann, who allegedly lived in Ireland before the Celts and were great masters of magic. I have a nagging feeling of having written about them before, probably in this log, but I have so far not been able to find the reference. I have several question concerning the word lists method. I've started using it (in fact - way too late), but I would like to know some things:
- what your intervals between each repetition, both in the first three columns and the latter two? - what do you do when you forget one word from the list during one of the repetitions? You simply shortly revise these words and write the last one you've forgotten or rewrite everything? How long do you wait then? - after these 5 (4) repetitions, do you come back to these words or not? I know you have an enormous experience with learning languages, so maybe you don't need it Probably some other questions will come to my mind soon. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||
