Yes, I do the same thing, but I add in a requirement of lots of example sentences.
I recently looked through a bunch of Spanish dictionaries at a bookstore and compared them by looking up 'hacer' and 'tener' (two really common verbs) in each one and seeing which had the
most (and varied) example sentences.
