I just read the threads about Ardaschir and his father, and that has made me think: do genetics have very much to do with language aptitudes, or is their importance quite small? Should relatives have more or less the same level of hability to learn languages?

RM, in my opinion, I think that genetics may play a role in the way a person receives and processes information, therefore affecting the way he acquires a language, but I think environment is the number 1 thing. A Japanese infant placed in a Romantsch family in Switzerland will learn 2 or more languages.

I think there are just as many examples of a child having the same interests as her parents than of a child who is uninterested in what his parents do. I'm sure many of you know of a family where the father and son have the same profession, and another where they have completely different professions.

I think that partly what made Ardaschir such a successful polyglot is that he has a family that encourages and fosters the learning of different languages. And now he is taking steps to ensure that his children have a chance to get exposed to different languages. This is not because of genetics but of the environment.
