Oldearth had a great answer, but I hate boats, so that is a non starter for me.
I would: a) Buy 18-100 mansions around the world and hire French speaking servants, tutors, personal trainers, etc for Monday & Tuesday. b) Hire Italians for Wednesday & Thursday. c) Mandarin speakers for Friday & Saturday. d) Sunday is a mixture day so I have to keep switching languages. e) Have a personal jet on standby if I want to change places. f) Make sure I was learning some other skill other than languages in each language. i.g. Cordon Vert Vegetarian Chef in French, Krav Maga self-defence in Italian, Painting and calligraphy in Mandarin. I would ban English for the entire year, and if I thought I'd reached C1/C2 in any of the above, then I'd swap it out for Japanese, Korean, Dutch. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Since the funds are unlimited, then depending on currency I'd first set aside at least several million of them for the time after that year. In this magical year, I'd use the money to fund stays lasting 3 months in each of Hungary (winter, and in southern Hungary to boot to reduce the chance of freezing my ass off), Poland (spring), Finland (summer) and Slovakia (fall). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Unlimited means unlimited, erh? But not necessarily across the one year limit.
I would invest a couple of million euros or dollars in a neighbour-free house with enough room for all the books and tapes and CDs I would buy for another couple of millions euros or dollars, and then I go on holiday for the rest of the year, travelling from place to place on my own jetplane and staying in idyllical hotels in grandiose surroundings where the staff was prepared to tolerate my atypical language speaking habits (OK, also other habits - like eating pizza for breakfast). In each place I would expect to meet a qualified and patient guide/language mentor in the airport, and I supposed that unlimited funding also could provide access to world class specialists in for instance paleontology, medieval manuscripts and astronomy. If I had one year of free time, without any obligation or worries about money, I'd completely give in to my wanderlust, both in the travel sense and the language sense. Rather than focus on becoming fluent in one language over the course of the year, I'd rather explore different places and languages I'm interested in, but don't necessarily want to become fluent in.
My dream itinerary would be something like this: 3 months in Russia: 1 month of intensive courses in Saint Petersburg, followed by a month of intensive courses in Moscow and then a 1-month journey on the Transsiberian or Transmongolian train with several stops along the way 3 months in Japan: 2 months of intensive courses, probably in Kyoto and Tokyo, followed by a month of exploring the country 1 month in Indonesia and/or Malaysia, exploring the country with a private tutor 1 month in Thailand, exploring the country with a private tutor 2 months in Brazil: 1 month of intensive courses in Rio followed a month of traveling around the country 1 month in Iceland, there's a summer school in Reykjavik that's tempting me 2 weeks cruise through the Norwegian fjords with a private tutor 2 weeks of island-hopping in Greece with a private tutor So many places, so many languages, so few time! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I would have hired Pierre Capretz as a private tutor, but sadly that is no longer possible.

I would make Paris my home base and rent a suite in an expensive hotel for
the entire year. I would buy a cat so I can talk to it when I'm alone in the house. For the first two months I would take French classes and hang out in cafes, striking up conversations with French people. I would also buy all the books and films my heart desired. Then, a month in Iceland taking intensive Icelandic classes and exploring the island. Back to Paris for a month, I would thank Pierre, the cat sitter, and further my French studies. Then, a month in Montreal, skyping with Pierre and Whiskers. In the meantime Pierre has made a hilarious video of Whiskers that has become a meme in France. It was even featured on French tv. Back in France, Whiskers, Pierre and I would embark on a two month promotional tour of France, signing autographs (paw-tographs). Realising the love that Pierre and Whiskers share for one another, I would give Pierre enough money so that he and Whiskers can live a comfortable life into old age. Tearfully, waving goodbye to Pierre and Whiskers, I would leave for Brazil and kick start my Portuguese with classes and immersion. After two months in Brazil, my French will have slipped so I would go back to France for the last three months. At the end of the year I would take the DELF B2 test and pass, whether honestly or due to the €1,000 bribe. 5 persons have voted this message useful |
