It is listed as one of the possible uses of the verb "gå":

Jag går och sovar: Me'n vaig a dormir I'm going to sleep

Again, it's sover, and I don't think anybody would say it that way.

Out of curiosity, who wrote that grammar book?

Interestingly, it seems as if that form is acceptable in Norwegian.

"Jeg går og sover" or "Jeg går for å sove", I have been informed, are both common ways of saying "I'm going to sleep."

I wonder if this form is acceptable in Danish?

Edit: Typo

I wouldn't be very likely to use "jag går och sover" either. I agree that it sounds a little strange, but I don't think it is incorrect. A similar construction sounds quite natural with many other verbs.

But I might easily say "jag går och sova". I am not even sure if that one is strictly correct, but that is the way it comes out comfortably.

It might be interesting for you to compare the Old-Swedish usage of "jag går att sova" here.

In fact I've heard that och in this case is really å (approximately), which is really att (and possibly (för) att), which is similar to your example.

Another verb:
Jag går (för) att handla - becomes:
Jag går å handlar - which is similar to the spoken och and therefore we have:
Jag går och handlar.

I think this was the explanation I heard. I might find the source again.
