The Devanagari script has evolved over time, much as one would expect. It is true that historically Sanskrit has been committed to written form using the local script, however by now Devanagari has been long established as the standard script for the language. All the Sanskrit books I've ordered from India, as well as all learning materials I've obtained for it, employ Devanagari.

One would have to pursue a most obtuse path in order to learn Sanskrit without learning Devanagari, and once learnt, one will have no desire at all to read the language through the medium of any other writing system, much less romanization. Not only does Devanagari perfectly fit Sanskrit, it is a pleasure to behold.

I don't find [dev'nagri] particularly pretty, I think Bengali and Tamil script look much more beautiful. I wish Hindi were written in Bengali script, that would be awesome.
(Thinking about it, Hindi in the form of Urdu does look sizzling).

It's on the Assimil website now:
http://en.assimil.com/methodes/2678/declinaisons/super-pack- livre-cd-audio-cd-mp3-3969

And also on Amazon.fr:
http://www.amazon.fr/Sanskrit-Superpack-Livre-4CD-audio/dp/2 700580435/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1378481317&sr=1-2

Most interesting is that the Assimil description of the mp3 and the audio CD both say it is 4h50. That is about an hour longer than, for example, New French With Ease.

It's also 864 pages, compared to 608 pages in New French with Ease.
