MY TURKISH COURSE AT THE ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE (AEC) Today we had our last Turkish lesson for the 2. semester 2008. This time we had a substitute teacher because our regular teacher is on holidays in Turkey. This substitute teacher was quite chaotic and had no clear ideas what to do in the lesson. It was the first time that she had to handle a small group (= 3 people) of adults, normally she teaches small children. Later in the lesson I told her to write some Turkish sentences on the blackboard. So she made up some examples with - ebilmek (= to be able to) and the negative form - ememek (= not to be able to), so that I could at least make a writing excercise of it and copy everything into my college block. To be very honest: Our private study group is of much better quality! The 1. AEC semester 2009 will start in February 2009. We will see, whether this course continues or not. We are five participants on the list now and that would be enough to continue the course. SELF STUDY OF UNIT 12 IN PLACE OF OUR PRIVATE STUDY GROUP TURKISH Today I met W. in the library as usually, but our program developed differently than it was scheduled. Instead of learning Turkish we started a conversation about astronomy in general and some internal matters of our astronomy club, where we both are members. It became too late to start Turkish then, because the library always closes at 7:00 p.m. So instead of our usual study group I will present my self study activities. Unit 12 has the title "Dün ne yaptınız?" which means "What did you do yesterday?". The whole unit deals with formulating sentences in the past "gecmis zaman". This is a tense of describing everything which has been finished in the past. For me this tense was already known, so I only had to repeat it. Let me present some conjugation schemes of "gecmis zaman" to you: 1. gelmek = to come, gelmemek = not to come ben geldim = I came sen geldin = you came o geldi = he, she, it came biz geldik = we came siz geldiniz = you came onlar geldi/geldiler = they came 2. okumak = to read, okumamak = not to read ben okumadım = I did not read sen okumadın = you did not read o okumadı = he, she, it did not read biz okumadık = we did not read siz okumadınız = you did not read onlar okumadı/okumadılar = they did not read Writing this I have just received a phonecall of W. suggesting me to postpone our private Turkish study group to tomorrow evening. I have agreed sponanously, therefore I will get the chance to write another report tomorrow evening. ONE DAY LATER: OUR PRIVATE TURKISH STUDY GROUP AT THE LIBRARY Fortunately, W. and I are both of the same opinion that regularity is essential for our language learning process and for our Turkish study group in particular. So we met one day later to catch up with the lost session. Today we worked through Unit 12 of the textbook "Güle Güle". There was a very interesting excercise where we had to write about what we did a day before using "geçmiş zaman" for the past. Both of us had made a lot of sentences at home and it was very interesting to compare them. As in very unit there was again a dialogue in Unit 12, which we read aloud several times (which helps me to assimilate the language well). OUR PRIVATE TURKISH STUDY GROUP AT THE LIBRARY Having got a piece of advice from my TAC collegue of Turkish, I decided that I will use the LEXILOGOS-tool consequently for my writing of the Turkish language, because this language cannot be written on a normal European keyboard correctly. The website of LEXILOGOS "clavier multilangue" is http://www.lexilogos.com There you can choose almost every language to write in with its special letters. For example for the German language you can find the umlauts and the "ß" on the "clavier multilangue". But let's get down to the nitty-gritty now. As scheduled I met my Turkish studyparnter W. at the library. We first read the grammar explanations in German on the topic "geçmiş zaman", the tense of the past. Then we compared the results of the excercises of Unit 12 in our workbook "Güle Güle". We both had almost no mistakes, so we could run quickly through it. In every unit at the end of it there is a listening excercise recorded on CD with a multiple choice test. W. and I did this at home. The advantage of this excercise is that at the back of the workbook there is as well a text transcription of this listening excercise. What we did in our study group was reading the transcription of the listening excercise aloud as a role play. We reciprokely correct each other's pronounciation then. For our Turkish study group for next week we will start preparing Unit 13 of our textbook "Güle Güle" on our own. Sorry for not posting for a while, I will try to catch up though on my reading :D So, you are only using Adult Education Classes and Private study groups (with Gule Gule)? How often do you do each of these? I mean, do you meet with W. 3 times a week and do Turkish lessons 2 times a week or what? Hi TEL, I have: Once a week (every Monday evening) my EAC Turkish course (= 90 minutes) Once a week (every Tuesday evening) my private Turkish study group (= 60 minutes) plus self-study at home and in the library to prepare both. plus vocabulary learning within public transport. This is my learning schedule and it fits me perfectly. I have a fulltime job anyway, I am not a student.
