MY FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS
Now I read again the negative experiences of other forum members with class learning at school. It feels strange for me to read such things. I had excellent language teachers at grammar school in all three languages English, Latin and French. And my Ancient Greek teacher was a polyglot, but at that time this only confused me. I didn't understand why he made so many language comparisons which other languages which we didn't learn at our school. Later on at university I had a teacher of Dutch who didn't like me and thought that I was uncapable of learning Dutch. But this couldn't prevent me from spending endless time in the language lab to practice my Dutch pronounciation and to assimilate the language. At my university studies of Romance languages I had some good language teachers and some merdiocres one, so this was a bit mixed. Later on at VHS (= Volkshochschule) I could choose my language courses, so I preferred to stay in courses with excellent teachers. One of those was the French conversation teacher of my last VHS - semester. And another excellent one is now the Danish teacher of my new Danish course, who is neither a native speaker nor has she a formal teaching qualification. The lessons are always well prepared, everybody in the group gets the equal chance to speak Danish - and I get enough corrections for my pronounciation. NOBELPRIJS NATUURKUNDE 2011: VOOR DE UITDIJING VAN HET HEELAL (= NOBEL PRIZE PHYSICS 2011: FOR THE ACCELERATING UNIVERSE) Winnaars: - Saul Perlmutter - Brian Schmidt - Adam Riess Het zijn er drie astronomen met allemaal Duitse achternamen, maar er zit geen Duitser tussen. Ik had de namen nog nooit ergens gelezen. Het is al een paar jaar eerder bekend dat het heelal steeds sneller (accelerated) uitdijt en men gaat ervan uit dat dit veroorzaakt door de donkere energie, maar nog geen wetenschapper heeft uitgevonden wat donkere energie precies is. De Volkskrant heeft er al een heel goed artikel overgeschreven met welke methodes de drie wetenschappers hun onderzoek hebben doorgevoerd. Hier is de link in het Nederlands: De Volkskrant: Nobelprijs Natuurkunde voor uitdijing van het heelal In dit artikel worden dus de belangrijkste gezichtspunten van het onderzoek gepresenteerd. Mijzelf is dit hele onderwerp goed bekend want daar heb ik al zo vaak wat over in astronomietijdschriften gelezen. Mij valt op dat in dit artikel type 1a supernovae genoemd worden maar niet uitgelegd wordt wat dat is. Een supernova is dus een grote sterexplosie van een ster die een veel grotere massa heeft dan onze zon. Maar bij een type 1a supernova gaat het om een dubbelstersysteem, waarvan één ster ervan een witte dwerg (dus een sterrenlijk) is die uit de tweede ster de massa wegtrekt. Daardoor onstaat dan ook een grote explosie die vervolgens kan leiden tot een neutronenster of een (stellar) zwart gat. Verder kan ik op de inhoud van het krantenartikel verwijzen. MY DANISH COURSE in D. Yesterday we had a very intensive Danish lesson with only two participants and the teacher, the others were absent. One of them was only holidays in Denmark, so yesterday we could read her viewcard in fluent Danish. Very intensive meant concretely that we read aloud together 13 pages in 1,5 hours time. We always read aloud one person after the other inclusive the teacher. Because we were so few pupils, I had the chance to read aloud more than 4 pages with pronounciation correction from the teacher. On the average I am able to prepare 4-5 pages at home or at work looking up all the vocabulary in my Danish - Dutch dictionary. But we never do any writing exercises in this course, so I have to learn this elsewhere. In the metro on my way to the lesson I was reading in my little Danish book about "Köbenhavn" and I recognized that I could read and understand the texts quite fluently, whereas only three months ago (!) these we too difficult for me to understand. A LOST SCHOOLFRIEND When I went to grammar school in Bavaria for two years I had a schoolfriend who was very good in languages at school. In 1972 my family moved away from Bavaria and I started corresponding with her. This went on until 1980 when we both succesfully passed our Abitur-exam. I went to university to study law and she moved to Munich to study foreign languages at the Dolmetscherinstitut. Shortly afterwards our correspondence contact broke off. Website of Dolmetscherinstitut in Munich I am now interested to find her again because I want to know what came out of her foreign language studies, but it's impossible to google her. She has a very common German name and may now be married and have a different family name. It's such a pity that I can't find her back on the internet. MY DANISH COURSE IN D. Yesterday we were together in the complete group of 5 participants and had a very interesting exercise sheet called "Idiomatiske udtryk" which consisted of an explanantion in Danish and an idiomatic sentence with a gap to fill in. For me it was the very first time that I saw any Danish idioms, because my textbooks don't present them. This weekend I will have some more time so that I can put some of these idioms on my blog website to be able to memorize them. Now I always take my (large!) Danish Gyldendal dictionary with me to the lesson and all of them are irritated because of the language combination. This shows once more that my L3 via L2 - method is widely uncommon in Germany. I have been working with this method already since beginning of the 1990s, long before I joined this forum. But I find it useful to be able to look some words up during the Danish lesson. And of course we read aloud again some pages of our political novel. As always in this new course I enjoyed the lesson very much. IN BETWEEN: Preparation of my next Danish lesson Tomorrow I will have my last Danish lesson before my autumn holidays of two weeks. My main preparation of the course is that I carry my large Gyldendal dictionary around with me in my rucksack and prepare some texts of our political novel in between. Often I have such possibility at work. It belongs to my "codex of honour" that I never go unprepared to my Danish course. Next week my program will change as I will continue my self-study with my textbook and workbook. When I am in the city I always try to do some Danish thinking on my way. Just training myself to create some Danish thoughts voluntarily like I can do this with my other foreign languages. MY DANISH COURSE IN D. yesterday we were with the complete group again. First we read two letters of a couple which was going to separate. I could understand 95 % of it without vocabulary help. Then we read our political book gain, which I had prepared before. The married female politician had a little affair with a journalist who afterwards posted an article about this in a yellow press magazine. I could understand what the topic was about. Of course our conversation in the course was in Danish again. So this was an interesting lesson and I got the chance again to read alloud and get my pronounciation corrected. Antaux kelka tempo mi demandis lin, cxu li pretas verki ion pri la Esperanto-kongreso, kion mi povus prezenti al mia Esperanto-grupo.
