Solfrid Cristina, yes there are some similarities in our approach to language learning. Esperanto was an exeption for me, but generally speaking I am not an instant learner of foreign languages: I need my time, I take may time and I am willing to do long-term-projects.

I concur about this kind of enthusiasm! May I ask, however, what was so different with Esperanto? It's supposed to be an easy language, but I think to get to some level even in one year you ought to learn very focussed.

With Esperanto I had two private lessons each week during a period of three months. After these three months already I was able to communicate and to write letters in Esperanto. With all my other foreign languges the whole learning process takes much more time!

MEET-UP FORUM PEOPLE

I will probably get the chance to meet 2-3 forum people before Christmas. There has to be some travel and it's always the financial calculation which makes things diffcult to me. So we're now in the planning te realize something which will allow us to speak some languages together at a place which I hopefully can reach.

COMMUTING?

I am missing a bit a commuting situation where I have to sit in a tram or the metro several times a week. This could of course occur, when I have a job or when my Danish course or my English business conversation will start again. I need commuting because this really "forces" me to do vocabulary learning while sitting in public transport. Other wise I tend to neclect my vocabulary learning and this shows a lack of discipline. So I have to criticize my habits, because I should do voabulary learning more often to make it more efficient.

So I am very glad that I can commute to my Danish course again tomorrow!

DANISH COURSE LESSON IN D.

We were 3 pubpils yesterday and we started our lesson with going through a Danish/Danish list of vocabulary trying to translate the words into German.

Examples:

tvaette = vaske = ? in German: waschen
svanger = gravid = ? in German: schwanger
spaege = taemme = ? in German: zähmen
forvorpen = fraek = ? in German: frech

It's a very long list with 50 pairs of Danish words!

Afterwards we turned to our political novel and read several pages of it aloud. The teacher remarked that while reading I was understanding the text better than usually (I had prepared the vocabulary at home and indeed my Danish text comprehension is growing!). Because we were so few pupils I could read alloud two large chunks of text, which was en excellent exercise for me.

CRIME NOVELS IN English FOR EXTENSIVE READING

Two days ago the sold in the mediothek a crime novel in English for only 3 EUR, so I found this a bargain. The book is hardcover and in good shape, so I decided to buy it. The author is Patricia Cornwell, who is American. I stared reading the book, but I have to stop reading because I get really sick of it. The protagonist investigator is a female medical pathologist and in this case she has to examine the torsos of dead bodies. While the pathologist is examinating these dead bodies she discusses very much in detail what she finds out. I feel sick when reading such topics so I decided to quit reading such a book. This is not a nice reading experience in a foreign language! So no chance for extensive reading in English this time!

I do have better exprience when reading crime novels written by Elizabeth George and Donna Leon - but my reading experience with these is already many years ago.

A QUICK GRAMMAR REVISION IN THE LAUNDERETTE

I used my time doing the washing to look through the grammar explanations in my workbook "Dänisch Neu", because there are some items which I am likely to forget when I don't use them. So I should keep my grammar knowledge up to date while I prepare all these reading texts for my Danish course. Tomorrow I will do the same again during my washing time which is about one hour.

Fasulye,

I am enjoying your log! Your Danish classes sound great.
I am a native English speaker living in Denmark. I have had some classes and now I am studying on my own. The grammar is not terribly different from English - listening comprehension is surely my biggest challenge.
