I've similar thughts as well but I don't say what I do (like fasulye), but sometimes other person makes this commentary, and when I have my thoughts in for example Dutch, German, Spanish or Englsh, it's a good situation because they don't know them, excepted my teddybear, with whom I can communicate in all the lanaguges although she perfers french, of course, but this wouoldn't be a private converstaion. How is the food in the canteen in your work? I hope that it taste well.

We have delicious food there of international cuisine. Very healthy as well. Better than in many restaurants. I am lucky.

UMSTRUKTUR DES LERNRHYTMUS FÜR APRIL 2009

Für den Monat April wird sich bei mir die Besonderheit ergeben, dass ich zwei verlängerte Wochenenden in den Niederlanden verbringen werde. Das wird insofern Auswirkungen auf mein Lernen der türkischen Sprache habe, als mein "Hauptlerntag" normalerweise der Sonntag ist. Wenn ich in den Niederlanden bin, werde ich in Aktivitäten so eingebunden sein, dass ich nicht zum Lernen kommen werde. Ich werde daher versuchen in den betreffenden Wochen, mein Türkischlernen auf die Abende nach Arbeitsschluss umzulegen. Im Notfall könnten wir auch das Lerntempo verlangsamen. An sich möchte ich aber, dass das durchgezogen wird. In unserer Arbeitsgruppe wollen wir das beide so. Ich bin gespannt, wie sich das zeitlich einbauen lässt, wenn mir in einem Monat zwei ganze Wochenenden fehlen.

OUR PRIVATE STUDY GROUP TURKISH IN THE LIBRARY

Yesterday evening I went to a lecture about Greenland after our study group, therefore my report comes a day later. As scheduled I met W. at our usual place. We started Unit 16 of "Güle Güle" with the title "Lütfen bir döner, lokantada" in our textbook. There are several dialoges in this unit with people conversing in a restaurant. Like always we read them aloud changing roles several times. The vocabulary of this unit deals mainly with food and how you describe it. Let met give you examples:

How is the food or drink?

- lezzetli = schmackhaft
- şahane = herrlich
- enfes = vorzüglich
- nefis = köstlich
- harika = wunderbar
- sağlıklı = gesund
- sağlıksiz = ungesund
- acı = scharf
- sarmısaklı = mit Knoblauch
- baharatlı = mit Kräutern
- yağlı = fettig
- şekerli = süß
- orta şekerli = mittelsüß
- sade = ungesüßt

We went through the whole Unit 16 in our textbook this time. There is a big grammar topic in this unit, the tense "geniş zaman" called "Aorist" or "r-Präsens" in German, it is a second tense of the present. I will give examples of this tense in a later post, because I don't want to make this too long. We had a bit of extra time, so we did some verb drills to check, if we both understood the building system of "genış zaman".

Wainting for the lecture to come, I had enough time to work through the excercises of the workbook of Unit 16, so I have now already completely prepared our next study meeting.

TECHNISCHER FORTSCHRITT

Bisher hatte ich meine türkischen Audio-CDs immer zu Hause an meiner Hi-Fi Anlage angehört, dadurch war ich immer an den gleichen Ort gebunden. Da dabei etwas kaputt gegangen ist, habe ich mir heute einen tragbaren CD-Spieler zugelegt, der mit Batterien betrieben werden kann. Dazu verwende ich ein Headset. Das bedeutet, dass ich ab jetzt an jedem beliebigen Ort meine türkischen Audio-CDs anhören kann. Da bietet mir völlig neue Möglichkeiten, in die Zielsprache einzutauchen, die ich bisher noch nicht hatte. Es ist ja auch nur ein kleines, leichtes Gerät, das finde ich sehr praktisch. Zusätzlich habe ich noch die ASSIMIL-Audio-CDs, damit kann ich richtig intensiv mein Hörverständnis trainieren und assimilieren. Super! Arbeitet ihr anderen auch mit moblilen Abspielgeräten? Mit welchen?

Ohne mobile Abspielgeräte würde bei mir gar nichts funktionieren! Wenn man wie ich soviel unterwegs ist, auch über mehrere Tage, geht es nicht anders. Vor zwei Jahren habe ich mir deshalb einen MP3-Player mit 20 GB Speicher gekauft und den habe ich quasi immer bei mir. Meine Audiomaterialien von den Sprachkursen wandle ich in mp3-Format um und speichere sie auf dem Player. Obwohl ich früher null Ahnung von Audiodateien hatte, komme ich heute spielend damit zurecht - selbst alte Sprachkassetten digitalisieren ist für mich kein Problem mehr.

EXTENSIVE LISTENING - READING ON THE MOVE

As my brandnew CD-player opens great possibilities to enhance my language-learning, I would like to deal with this topic here.

In the forum I often see people writing about the L/R - method of Prof. Arguelles. I am not so familiar with his methods, so I don't really know if his L/R - method is equivivalent to my way of doing "listening - reading". Perhaps one reader of my log can check that and inform me.

My way of "listening - reading" means that I listen to the Turkish speaker and read the Turkish text at the same time. So this is monolingual and for me it is a method of assimilation by excluding the native language as far as possible. For my Turkish "listening - reading" excercises I mainly use the ASSIMIL book "Türkisch ohne Mühe" together with the 4 CDs "Kolay Türkçe", which has very abundant audio material. This is additional to my study group, as my studyparnter Turkish hasn't got any ASSIMIL material.

I started today using this method "on the move" that means in the launderette, in a bistro, on a bench, in the library, in the metro or at any other suitable realtively quiet place. Before that I was always confined to the same room at home with a very small table - which was not a very pleasant surrounding to do a lot of audio-training.

What do I want to achieve by doing "listening - reading"? Of course this works very effectively to enhance my listening skills. It also helps with the pronounciation of a language, but I must admit that the pronounciation of Turkish is not so difficult - it is a phonetic language anyway. Sometimes I don't know on which syllable to put the stress, so therefore audio helps. But my most important target is to come into the thinking process of Turkish and my "listening - reading" method is one important means to achieve that.

PS: Having read Iversens clarification of the methods, I see that my method is not equivivalent to L/R. It isn't shadowing either, because I don't get the chance to repeat the Turkish sentences. So it is really my individual method.
