OUR TURKISH STUDY GROUP IN THE LIBRARY This time I will start writing the first part of my report writing in advance to the coming study group this evening. I want to explain the main grammar topic of Unit 20 of "Güle Güle" which we intend to finish today. This unit deals with a tense of the past which my former Turkish teacher called "miş-Vergangenheit", in Turkish it is called "geçmiş zaman" (zaman = time, tense). This is a very special tense because it doesn't exist in the Germanic or Romance languages which I can speak. Geçmiş zaman of the verb "oturmak" = to live: ben oturmuşum sen oturmuşsun o oturmuş biz oturmuşuz siz oturmuşsunuz onlar oturmuş / oturmuşlar ş = pronounced as German "sch" ç = pronounced as German "tsch" There are different cases in which to use this tense, but the most obvious is, when you have heard from someone else that something has happend. For example: Fatma İstanbul'a gitmiş. Into German I would translate this as: Fatma soll nach Istanbul gefahren sein. By using this tense it is clear that Fatma herself didn't tell me about it. ----- This report will be continued.... OK, as planned we could finish Unit 20 of the workbook "Güle Güle", so that there are now only 4 vocabulary "modules" left. Our session was only 30 minutes short because my studyparnter told me that he - on his own descision - registered in this forum and had some questions about the usage of the forum. By the way, his nickname is "Johannes". I offered him to go to a public PC with him and to give him a general introduction into the usage of this forum. He wants to get more practice in the Turkish language and I explained him the usage of the Messenger and of the Lexilogos-tool. This gives us both the possibility to exchange PMs in Turkish from now on. He had a lot of questions about how the forum functions and I took the time to answer them. Of course this unexpected PC activity shortened our actual study session. We have still two meetings to go to work through the "modules" of "Güle Güle". OUR PRIVATE STUDYGROUP AT THE LIBRARY Again I will give my readers a "sneak preview" into the topic of our study group tomorrow, so that I don't have to write such a long report so late. We will deal with the module section of "Güle Güle". What is a module? A module of our book is a collection of words (for example "things you can find in an office") with pictures but without any German translations. It looks a bit like in a childrens' picture book. Working through these modules means that we work through these collection of words without having a context. This is not my favourite method, but I am able to do that and to cram in all those words. As we will start with module 1 tomorrow evening, I will present this to you: Hava nasıl? = Wie ist das Wetter? - güneşli = sonnig - rüzgarlı = windig - yağmurlu = regnerisch - bulutlu = bewölkt - bultusuz = unbewölkt - sizli = neblig - karlı = verschneit - sicak = heiß - soğuk = kalt But we will move on to the next modules, because this is not enough stuff for one whole meeting. ------ Report to be continued tomorrow after the study meeting... I have just returned from our Turkish study meeting. I told my studypartner about the assumption in another thread of this forum that polyglots never study together. My personal opinion about this is different. I would appreciate very much studying with another polylgot. But anyway, this topic lead us to the conclusion that both of us in this study group profit enormously for our language study. Today we dealt especially with module 1 about the weather. This time I would like to present to my Turkish fellow students and Turkish native speakers my homework. We had agreed on making one sentence with every new word of module 1. My homework: 1. Krefeld'de bu yazda hava güneşli yoktu. 2. Ne zaman rüzgarlı hava vardı? 3. Sıcak hava hiç bir sevmiyorum. 4. Kış ortasinda hava sık sık soğuk. 5. Yağmurlu hava için bana şemsiye lazım. 6. Krefeld'de hava genellikle karlı değil. 7. Bultulu hava seviyorum. 8. Sisli hava trafik için tehlikelidir. If I made any mistakes, a correction is welcome. I had to use a dictionary, because some words which I needed, were unknown to me. Pronounce like the "e muet" of French and like "e" in the Dutch word "de".
