OUR TURKISH STUDY GROUP IN THE LIBRARY Today I have a nice anecdote to tell, which happened before we started our studygroup. I was sitting in a reading corner of the mediothek reading a scientific magazine. At the customers' desk I heard two employees speaking to each other with rather loud voices so that I could understand everything. Let's call them "Frau A" and "Herr B". Frau A: (holding a novel in her hands) - "Was soll ich denn damit jetzt machen, da steht etwas mit "eylül" oder so ähnlich und ich weiß nicht, was der Titel bedeuten soll?" Herr B: "Da kann ich aber nicht helfen, denn ich bin der türkischen Sprache auch nicht mächtig." Spontanously I decided that I could help these desperate employees and I told them that I have some knowledge of Turkish. "Eylül" means "September" so I first translated the title of the Turkish novel to them. The mediothek offers novels in foreign languages to the readers, among the an assortiment of perhaps 20 - 25 Turkish books. Under the titel and the name of the Turkish author there was written the word "Sayılar", which means "Erinnerungen", which is in German a typical title for an autobiography. Now the employees got to know, which type of book it was. I felt super-proud that my Turkish knowledge appeared to be so practically useful! At 18:00 h we started our Turkish studygroup. There was no real new grammar topic in Unit 6, but quite a lot of unknown vocabulary. With my new MP3 - player I had listened to Unit 6 and the previous units very often this week. I had only two tiny mistakes in my homework. My studypartner Johannes would want to accelerate the learning tempo, but my vote is to do one unit each week, which suits me fine. Jiwon, das war ein richtiges Erfolgserlebnis, soetwas! Man bekommt das Gefühl, dass die türkischen Sprachkenntnisse einen prakitschen Nutzen haben im täglichen Leben. Mein neuer MP3 - Player ist jetzt mein ständiger Begleiter, ich benutze ihn nur für Sprachen, nicht für Musik. Die Jugendlichen mit so einem Apparat hören alle nur Musik!!! Das hat zur Folge, dass ich immer auch die älteren Lektionen von "Einstieg Türkisch" hintereinander höre. Vielleicht wirst du in Seoul mal deutsche Touristen treffen und ihnen den Weg erklären können. OUR TURKISH STUDY GROUP IN THE LIBRARY Today we went through our homework of Unit 7 of "Einstieg Türkisch". With my new MP3 - player I had done quite some audio -training not only of this unit, but also of the previous units. Some answers I already know by heart, that's good because it makes it easier to recall them in situations where I might need them. There is no new grammar topic for us in this unit. The title of this unit is called "Param hiç yok" = "I don't have any money" and the unit deals with two dialogues, one playing in a bank and the other playing in a jeans shop where they sell "Türk malı" = "Turkish merchandise". What is irritating is the inflation money used in these dialogues. For example 250 $ = 131.250.000 TL. The book was published in 2005. My former Turkish teacher told us in class that there has been a currency reform to the Turkish Lira (= TL), but I dont know how much 250 $ would be worth today. Perhaps a reader of my log knows this and can inform us. In my homework I had one serious grammar mistake, the rest was perfect. Let's do some math :Now 1 usd is about 1,45 TL, then 250 usd is like 362,5 TL About that money reform, You should know that we have a high inflation rate in Turkey. And because of the inflation the numbers on your money gets bigger and bigger . 2 or 3 years ago 1 dolar was about 1.300.000 TL. So the big guys decided to throw 6 zeros from our money because we dont really use that last six digits. So it means that 131.250.000 TL you mentioned above is equal to 131,25 TL . i hope that explains all. İyi çalışmalar.
