OUT TURKISH STUDY GROUP IN THE LIBRARY

Today I met my studypartner Johannes again for our weekly meeting. We compared our homework Unit 8 plus Test 2 as an extra lesson. "Tests" in this book are a kind of repetition excercises to check, if the previous 4 lessons have been understood well. With our thorough way of studying these tests are not very difficult.

New grammar:

Kimin (genitive) için? = für wen?

Benim için = für mich
Senin için = für dich
Onun için = für ihn, sie, es
Bizim için = für uns
Sizin için = für euch, für Sie (polite form)
Onların için = für sie

Neyin (genitive) için? = für was?

Bunun için = für dieses
Şunun için = für dieses da
Onun için = für jenes

So far our small new grammar topic. I like the audio CDs of this book very much. To every unit I listen several times to assimilate the Turkish accent very well. As I wrote before in this log, I am very precise with audio-training. I can't travel to my target countries, so I have to compensate this by doing an extra amount of audio-training.

For next week we will both prepare Unit 9 of our book "Einstieg Türkisch".

Onların means "Theirs" Onların için doesn't mean much
you should say "Onlar için"

Is it right: I should say: Onlar için, but not siz için or biz için?
what is the grammar rule ?
I have to say: bunun (genetiv) için but not bu için or perhaps bunu için ?

This is not really clear to me.

Johannes

It is because all pronouns are unique single state.
But "onlar" (pronoun for "they" in English) is in plural form.

The derivation of onlar is:
o : he/she/it, this, that (meanings may change due to syntax

-ler : -s (pluralmaker suffix)

o + ler => olar : (concerning there are more than a o (he/she/it)) The suffix has changed to -lar due to vowel harmony

o + n + ler => onlar : unique blending letter -n is added to fix the issue.

In fact the problem is not with onlar, it is much related with other pronouns.

You say "benim için" which simply means "for me".
and "onlar için" which means "for them"

benim için : for me
senin için : for you
onlar için : for them
kedi için : for the cat
kral için : for the king

Old usage for "benim için" is "ben için".
But it doesn't sound good. So they are used in genitive case.

All other names are used in genitive case. Because "onlar" is a constructed pronoun it is considered in regular "for + N" structure and used as nominative.

These are important grammar explanations, Ertugrul. Also to me it was unclear, why it has to be "onlar için". But this pronoun contains a plural form, that's it.

OUR TURKISH STUDY GROUP IN THE LIBRARY

In the beginning of our meeting I handed a different Turkish textbook out to my studypartner to test it at home. We will speak about this the next time and if he agrees, we will use it after our book "Einstieg Türkisch".

We went through our homework of Unit 9 of "Einstieg Türkisch" yesterday.

One grammar feature was the Superlative.

Let me give some examples:

Question: Hangisi? = Which of these? (EDIT)

1. En pahalısı 35 milyon Türk Lirası
2. En güzeli Bayan Monroe
3. En yaşlısı dedem.
4. En ucuzu Crash Airways
5. En kücüğü benim evim

Another (not really new) feature was the difference between önce (before) and sonra (after).

Let's recapitulate the weekdays:

Pazartesi = Monday
Salı = Tuesday
Çarşamba = Wednesday
Perşembe = Thursday
Cuma = Friday
Cumartesi = Saturday
Pazar = Sunday

We had to do the following excercise:

1. Önce cumartesi sonra pazar.
2. Salıdan sonra pazar.
3. Perşembeden önce çarşamba.
4. Pazartesiden sonra salı.
5. Pazartesiden önce pazar.
6. Öğleden sonra akşam.

There were also some more difficult excercises in this unit. I like it, if it is a mixture of easy and difficult. As our next homework we will prepare Unit 10 of "Einstieg Türkisch" for next week.

OUR PRIVATE TURKISH STUDY GROUP IN THE LIBRARY

Yesterday evening we went through the whole Unit 10 of "Einstieg Türkisch", which we had prepared at home. We decided that after this book we will work with "Sprachkurs Plus Türkisch" (Cornelsen Verlag). The new book will have two audio CDs, which we both appreciate.

The only new for us grammar of Unit 10 was the following:

Zahl + Zeitbegriff + Zahl

Examples:

dört saatta bir = einmal in 4 Stunden = once in 4 hours
iki günde bir = einmal in 2 Tagen = once in two days
üç senede bir = einmal in 3 Jahren = once in three years
iki ayda üç = dreimal in zwei Monaten = three times in two months

It's a bit difficult to learn because in German and English these expressions are turned around.

Our homework will be to prepare Unit 11, which has some new verb forms to offer.
