You actually have the glottal stop in German. It is pronounced at the beginning of any word that starts with a vowel. The sentence "Es ist eine ausgezeichnete Idee" is pronounced /ʔɛs ʔɪst ʔaɪnə ʔaʊsɡətsaɪçnətə ʔideː/. It is used inside of some words too, like "beenden" /bəʔɛndən/ and "geahnt" /ɡəʔaːnt/. Danish, however, sometimes uses this sound in combination with other consonants, or at the end of a word, where it will probably be more difficult to pronounce for you.

Yes, Levi, that's an interesting remark, thanks for quoting me the IPA-transcriptions of the German examples. In these cases the glottal stop occurs in front of the second syllable. It seems to me as if Danish uses glottal stops at the end of a syllable. It's on unusual places in a word, this makes it for me difficult to pronounce.

By the way, in my dictionaries there is no German IPA-transcription, unless words of foreign origin are used in the German language. Therefore I have no experience with the IPA of German. But I now see that it is easy to read.

Til Köbenhavn 2011 - Danish resources

My financial situation is insecure, therefore I decided now to buy the Danish study material I will need for the next 1,5 years of study.

From my former VHS Danish course of 2003 I already have the textbook + workbook of "Dänisch neu" (Hueber Verlag), but I have now ordered the two audio CDs. This will be my next study material after "Einstieg Dänisch".

For my study after these I have ordered a very new Danish textbook + workbook which is called "Vi snakkes ved!" (Hueber Verlag) Also this material has two audio CDs.

The fact that I don not need to do any more languages courses at Volkshochschule is saving me a lot of money which I can spend for good audio materials. In any case now I have enough Danish resources to study by July 2011 and beyond.

When I start with the new study books, I will present their description in detail.

If you are interested, the German Wiktionary has IPA transcriptions in its entries. And not just for German words; you can look up words in all sorts of languages on that dictionary, with IPA transcriptions and German definitions provided (though the English Wiktionary has a lot more foreign words in it).

SELF-STUDY TURKISH: Unit 19 of "Einstieg Türkisch", Week 49

The topic of this unit is "health", being sick, going to the doctor and the different ways how Turks express their health status.

A simple topic: In my opinion = meiner Meinung nach

Bence (= in my opinion)
Sence
Onca
Bizce
Sizce
Onlarca

Example sentences:

1. Bence kendi evim daha güzel. (Meiner Meinung nach ist mein eigenes Haus schöner.)
2. Onca Türkçe kolay değil. (Seiner/ihrer Meinung nach ist Türkisch nicht einfach.)
3. Bizce bu lokanta çok pahalı. (Unserer Meinung nach ist dieses Restaurant sehr teuer.)

The doctor asks the patient. Doktor hastayı soruyor: Neyiniz var? Neyiniz aciyor?

Possible replies of the patient:

1. Midem bulanıyor. (Mir ist übel.)
2. Ateşim var. (Ich habe Fieber.)
3. Canım sıkılıyor. (Mein Herz wird gequetscht. = Ich bin unruhig. Ich langweile mich.)
4. Ishal oldum. (Ich habe Durchfall.)
5. Yaram var. (Ich habe eine Wunde.)
6. Her tarafım aciyor. (Jede Seite tut mir weh.)
7. Uykum da hiç yok. (Ich kann überhaupt nicht schlafen.)
8. Kendimi kötü hissediyorum. (Ich fühle mich schlecht.)
9. Rahatsızım. (Ich bin unruhig.)
10. Buram acıyor. (Diese Stelle tut weh.)

Kendi = selbst = self

Example sentences with "kendi":

1. Kendimi harika hissediyorum. (Ich fühle mich super.)
2. Bu ev kendim yaptım. (Dieses Haus habe ich selbst gebaut.)
3. Hastanesinde kendisi çalışıyor. (Er/sie arbeitet in seinem/ihrem eigenen Krankenhaus.)
4. Bunu kendimiz istedik. (Dieses wollten wir selbst.)
5. Rakıyı kendin içtin. (Den Raki hast du selbst getrunken.) (Raki = Anisschnaps)
6. Bunu kendiniz söylediniz. (Dieses habt ihr selbst gesagt.)
7. Oraya kendim gittim. (Dorthin bin ich selbst gegangen.)

You can see that "kendi" recieves the posessive suffixes.

THE ALTAIC LANGUAGE GROUP ON YOU TUBE - (Neighbour languages of Turkish)

Like Danish belongs to the Germanic Languages, Turkish belongs to the Altaic languages. The Germanic language group is well known to my as I already speak three languages of them fluently: German, Dutch and English. As I have chosen to learn Turkish, I am now very interested to get at least a view on the other Altaic languages as well, even if I have no plans to study one of them. Here You Tube helps me a lot. Glossika teaches the basics of Uyghur, a Turkic language in China using the Arabic script. LanguageObsession is currently has already made videos explaining Khazakh, another Turkic language, but has now started studying Azerbadjani and makes very interesting videos showing the grammar, expressions and example texts of the language. The latter language uses the Latin script, so I can read the words and it's very closely related to Turkish. So I can understand these videos very well. These two languages are mutually intellegible like Danish and Swedish. So, I watch such You Tube videos with great interest because they reinforce my Turkish language, as I point out the differences in my feedbacks to the video maker. No, I don't get confused!
