SELF-STUDY DANISH AND TRAVEL PREPARATION
I am busy with self-study of Unit 13 of "Dänisch Neu" which deals with the order of meals in a restaurant and with all kinds of food. I had earlier lessons about this so it's mainly a repetition, but very practical for my trip to Kopenhagen. Both books are paralell with similar grammar topics, this makes the practise more intensive. Today I sat in a cafe studying my Danish. I will try to get all the washing (launderette!) done this weekend so that I can concentrate con packing and some Danish studies before my departure. I have already made a list of everything I want to take with me. At the congress itself we will receive a bag with a lot of tourist information, so perhaps my old(!) map of Kopenhagen will be superfluous. In any case I will take a phrasebook with me:
"Van Dale Kosmos Taalgids - Wat & Hoe Deens".

PHRASEBOOKS - WAT & HOE against KAUDERWELSCH
For Danish I have also got the Kauderwelsch book which gives a basic interoduction into the structure of the Danish language. I my situation with slmost 2 years of language studies behind me this is not what I need right now.
The Wat & Hoe book offers collections of phrases or expressions (even single words) for certain situations (for example: "De weg vragen", "Bestellen in een restaurant") and that's what I need in Denmark, the grammatical backround up to A1-A2 - level I have already studied with my textbooks. A disadvantage of the Wat & Hoe book is that it uses Dutch transcription to indicate the pronounciation and not standard IPA.
Anyway, such a phrasebook is a good reading tool when sitting in the train for many hours.

DET VAR EN SKAM FOR MIG!

ME EXPERIENCE WITH SPEAKING DANISH IN KOPENHAGEN
To sum it up: My experience is positive! People in the shops are willing to speak Danish with me, as far as I am able to express myself. When important keywords are unknown, I return to English to make my messages clear, but as far as I know how to say something in Danish people really give their answers in Danish as well. I feel appreciated in my willingness to use this language, so this gives me a feeling of a success, even if my abilty to talk Danish is still quite limited. I also appreciate that my travel-friend (who is German) wants to speak Danish with me when we are walking around in the city. So both alternatives work: Speaking Danish with a German person and speaking Danish with the shopkeepers in Kopenhagen.
Concerning my Danish courses there will be an important change next semester: I will attend the advanced-level Danish course of my travel friend in Duesseldorf and I will self-study with my textbooks to fill the gap between my current knowledge and the higher level of this Danish course. The participants will only speak Danish there and they are fluent, so this we be a great help for me to assimilate this immersion. This new course for me will start in September after the summer school holidays.
