"U senjoro, ja honorata gasto, a petos trehuminninE a dehavinninE ...".

-----

Fasulye and Sprachprofi are discussing Esperanto meetings, and in the course of this discussion Sprachprofi mentions a bad case of amateur theater in Esperanto in Berlin and Fasulye doubts that I can understand it. The doubt is well founded, both because I all in all have spent less than half an hour listening to Esperanto on the internet (several months ago) and because the two actors aren't speaking the kind of Esperanto I have been reading. For instance I have tried to listen to the passage quoted above at least ten times, and I still can't figure out what the "vocuum" is that no. 1 is ordering. And the answer is even more incomprehensible for a newbie like me. Vocuum seems to be an orange fluid with or without alcohol (which could be the Russian vodka that is discussed a little bit later). To cleanse my ears I also tried to listen to some other clips at youtube. In one clip from a conference in Le Mans (France) everybody spoke French. In another a lot of people were talking in the same time, and in a third people were singing. Finally in the fourth clip an elderly gentleman ran around on the scene while speaking Esperanto. But when he settled down and began to speak slowly and deliberately about rethorics then I could almost follow him.

And the big news of today is of course that our Administrator has returned. And not only didn't he pull the plug as we had feared, but it actually seems that he is going to repair the errors that have hit the profile module. The message is that we have got too many profiles. One solution to that would be to delete all profiles that haven't been used since they were created or belong to people who haven't written anything and haven't visited the forum for ages. But let's see what happens.

It's not bad - the two are speaking Esperanto with awful accents on purpose. They are switching accents often, showcasing the worst that various nationalities can do to nia kara lingvo, short of actually making grammar mistakes.

In "La Misvojo" they were speaking Esperanto-influenced English or German at the beginning and then recited a famous poem; scrambled poetic words are hard to recognize so I don't blame you for not understanding much. You could probably still use the sketch for practise understanding the influence various languages have on Esperanto, but you should read the poem here at the same time as listening. The accents in that sketch, in order: British, Russian, French, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch (or maybe Saxonian German dialect?), American, German.

Good Esperanto speakers should be able to understand them in the sketch "La Restoracio" though, at least when the volume isn't too low (despite the volume I can still understand 100% of the words). Practise with that sketch and you'll be prepared for the worst speakers you can find at an international Esperanto meeting. The situations were: 1) Russian in a Japanese restaurant; 2) German in an Italian restaurant; 3) French in a British restaurant; 4) Danish and Argentinian in a train to the Universala Kongreso in Bialystok.

This whole comedy night was an idea Chuck and I had just one week before it would take place, so I accept responsibility for props missing (vodka, beer, wine all being represented by multivitamin juice) and the comedians not being well-prepared. Since neither of them live in Berlin they only had 10 hours together before the sketch. However, we figured it would be too good of an opportunity to miss to get the two accent magicians to do a sketch together, considering Professor Duncan Charters lives in the USA and is in Europe very rarely.

To re-calibrate your Esperanto accent, you could watch some videos on Dotsub in Esperanto with Esperanto or English subtitles.

For example this report about this year's Internacia Junulara Kongreso, a report about Burning Man or various parts of the "Esperanto estas" documentary. I have personally looked at them to make sure the accent is worth imitating.

I believe you mean 'vodkon' - in the first sentence of the actual sketch? Keep in mind C is pronounced /ts/ in Esperanto.

The Japanese waiter then says to the barman "Sinjoro, nia honorata gasto petas tre humile eble havi iun trinkaĵon, prefere kun alkoholo, ekzemple la bonan rusan vodkon".
