ъгъл = corner in Bulgarian (= угол in Russian, but in my Bъlgarian dictionary the ъ is put right after щ)

Yes, I had written Xadrez = Chess (in Portuguese) in the belief that I was writing in the Latin Alphabetic game. However I may have been justified even in posting it here, as the 'x' in Portuguese would rather sound like 'ш', and therefore the position according to the Cyrillic alphabet wouldn't be totally off the mark

Ъгъл is the only word in Bulgarian starting with -ъ-
I think there are no words in Russian starting with ы or ь, so we probably need a -э- word:

электрон - electron, Russian

( ...unless somebody can think of a word in any other language that starts with ы or ь )

ыджыд = big (Komi)

Following from the latest entry, here's another word from Komi:
