Day 33

Completed a total of 56% of Chapter 12 of 20 in Mastering Arabic
4.1 minutes of Anki

Total cards in Anki deck: 250

Hours Studied Today: 0.60
Total Hours: 32.32

I could have done more in Mastering Arabic today, but the new-found reading was making my brain hurt so I
stopped prematurely. The first verb tense that I have been introduced to is the past tense. I'm curious as to why
this is since it is in polar opposition to most other texts I've ever read, but I'm just going to go with it. I learned
about roots a few weeks ago, but they are still somewhat of a novelty to me, I like the idea a lot though. The
largest problem I am having reading, apart from the silly font, is remembering vowels. I knew this was going to
be the most difficult thing for me, and sure enough it is. I wonder how anyone, even natives remember or can
tell what vowels to put in to the roots to make sense and how reading in Arabic is not just one big game of
"Telephone."

I have absolutely no urge to study from Mastering Arabic today. On the plus side of life though, I discovered uz-
translations today and downloaded some new resources to start using. I am very excited to start using these, and
will probably begin tomorrow with at least some of them. Beginning Monday, I am going to start attempting the
FLR method with my teach yourself, of which I just finally got the audio from the aforementioned site. Also, I got
the first Harry Potter book in Arabic. Once I go through the painful process of setting them in bilingual format I
will start to read that. Does anyone know an easy, painless way to go about aligning these things that is not
going to take me a year to do?

The infinitive verb form or the "original" verb in Arabic is the third person singular simple past tense. For example, in English the infinitive of verb "to do" is DO, but in Arabic it's DID, thus all other tenses and persons conjugate based on DID in Arabic.

Arabic is a very systematic language. There are rules governing how words should be pronounced. It is by no means a wild guessing game like certain words in English. The root system is the most important concept in Arabic. Once you master the system, you'll learn new words ten times faster. These tables show you how to pronounce words that fit certain patterns. Memorizing the tables by heart will save you hundreds of hours down the road.

بالتوفيق

Firstly, thank you Cetacea for the advice. I actually just saw your post but started to work on word shapes (your
second point) this evening. I have started to go through my Teach Yourself manual in the fashion of the FLR
method this week. I find that this book's layout is a lot nicer than the Mastering Arabic I was working from. I
have a considerable amount of words which I need to add to my Anki, as well as my word shapes that I cover. I
plan to get through Chapter 3 tomorrow, and then begin free writing a little to cement this knowledge. I am
realizing how severely I am in need of an Arabic-English dictionary, I could not find a decent free on-line
dictionary in my quick search and am thus limited in my ability to complete the first part of the FLR method of
learning "keywords" to extend my sentences, but this is not really something I am too terribly worried about. I
am okay with the short sentences at this point. I also was pointed to a nice website for streaming TV called
BeelineTV which I watched for about twenty minutes today and
understood very little of. Again, I am not terribly worried about this at this point, it is more a matter of tuning
my ears to the language at this point. I had some frustration with uz-translations and my attempts to make
bilingual texts between Arabic and English did not fare well, so I guess I have to hold off on this part of my work
for a little bit.

Day 39

20 minutes of Arabic TV
55 minutes of FLR
14.2 minutes of Anki - added 28 new cards

Total cards in Anki deck: 278

Hours Studied Today: 1.49
Total Hours: 36.76

I am enjoying this new method/approach. I am finding that I am remembering a lot more and able to use what I
remember pretty confidently. I still have yet to finish Chapter 3 (I am about halfway through) and upon finishing
the chapter will try and write a small blurb, and maybe post it on here for corrections. At this point, I think that
FLR is a good method for me and will keep my interest level up at least until I get to a level where I can begin to
read native sources.

I realized yesterday that all of a sudden I know the vast majority of my Anki deck. I do not know how or why this
happened, but it did. Today I only had 11 cards to review. The good thing, at least for me is that A.) I am
starting to remember things and B.) I have plenty of more cards I can add that I just have not got around to
putting into the system. I did not get the chance to watch any Arabic TV today but I will make sure to put that
time in tomorrow.

Wanderlust: I met a woman from Sweden today who told met hat she would help me with my Swedish whenever
I would like to do so. This is very exciting as Swedish and Czech are the only languages in my list that I do not
have a person I can practice with in person. Now I just need to find that native Czech speaker who is willing to
help in my area. Also, as I am nearing the halfway point of my Arabic journey for the year I am beginning to look
forward to the next quarter of my year, which brings me back to my original second language, Italian. I am
planning on doing a lot of reading, watching and listening during the course of those three months in addition to
talking to as many people in my community as possible!

I intended to do more studying today and actually get around to writing something in Arabic, but my body
decided that sleeping was a better idea. I'm off from work until Sunday evening so I intend to get some good
writing time in each day and get some more listening and watching in. On Monday I start going through the next
three chapter of my TY. I have noticed that the last couple of days I have been thinking in Arabic a little bit
more. I don't know much so the things going through my head are very limited, but it is still an encouraging
sign that I completely blame on FLR's focus on listening to just one unit's audio as much as possible for an entire
week. Also, today I noticed that I am beginning to come through the fog while watching TV. I am beginning to
pick out words here and there, which is also very exciting.

My first day off from work, I was not able to do much work. My Anki also had not reset because I generally do it
at about 5 am at work. Other than that, not much to say.
