Day 43

30 minutes of Writing

Today was my first time writing an original passage in Arabic. I have to say that I felt like the kindergartners I
used to teach. I was having to look up spellings to things every other word. The encouraging thing was that I
knew how to say everything I was trying to, and I used most of the constructions and things I had learned in my
first FLR week. I will post my writing passage below and hopefully will get some constructive criticism from the
more knowledgeable people here. Keep in mind two things about my writing:
1.) I have just started, so my writing is very basic.
2.) I do not have much vocabulary to say very much, so it may not make complete sense.
Another caveat: I skipped over the first part of the FLR method concerning keywords so my sentences do not
flow terribly well. At some point I hope to get around to learning the keywords, but at this point I am not
worrying about it.
صباح اكجير، أنا جيمس. أتكلم عربي، فرنسي، إتالي، أنجليزي، ألماني، أسباني وروسي. أند كلب اسم كارمن. أند اخت اسمة حذر. كيف حالك؟ كارمن أسودة وأبيدة و هي
صغيرة. هي لطيفة وجماة. أتةلم انةليزي بطلاقة ماأتكلم عربي قليل. أنا مشغول الاشن أتكلم ثير.
There is my first attempt at writing in Arabic. Please correct what I'm sure are many errors.

Hey, I think it's great that you're starting to write Arabic sentences too. I've been
trying to do more of that recently. Think it's a great way to improve. And don't worry
about how the sentences sound. I constantly make disparaging comments about my own
sentences... how amateurish they sound, how much they read like the work of a first-
grader, how little sense they make etc...
Now, I'm a beginner myself and I'm definitely no authority on the language but I do
think I can spot some errors.
1) Good morning = صباح الخير
2) I think you're trying to say "I have a dog named Carmen." I don't know what "أند"
means. Google translate says it means "End". Maybe you could try "لدي كلبة واسمها
كارمن" (Ladii kalba wa 'ismuhaa Carmen) or "لدي كلبة مسماة كارمن" (Ladii kalba musammaa
Carmen). Kalba instead of Kalb cos' Carmen is a female dog.
3) Same with the sister.
4) سود وبيض (Sawda wa bayda). These are the feminine versions of 'aswad and 'abyad.
There is no 'aswada or 'abyada. Colors are not conjugated like that. And "waw" should
always be connected to the following word.
5) The sentence kinda reads as "I speak English fluently did not speak little Arabic".
Maa is used to negate the past tense when used with the past tense verb. Maa takallamtu
= I did not speak. Lam is used to negate the past tense when used with the jussive
(a shortened present) verb. Lam 'atakallam = I did not speak. Perhaps the sentence
could be better written as "أتكلم إنجليزي بطلاقة لكني أتكلم عربي قليل فقط".
6) You're busy ? speak ?. My vocabulary is not good enough to decipher that. Sorry :(
7) Think all the languages should be definite. أتكلم العربية
I apologize if I've read any of your sentences wrongly. People much better than I am in
Arabic should come around shortly (Kinan, Cetecea, Andrew C etc). They'll do a much
better job with your sentences. Probably have something to say about my corrections
too.
Good luck and keep writing.

Thank you for the corrections strikingstar! The اند should have been عندي but I tried not to look up too much if I
thought I could remember how to spell the word I wanted. The last sentence I really do not have enough vocab
for myself but I was trying to say that I am busy because I speak many languages, however I did not recall/know
the word for languages. As for today, it is the last day of my first week of FLR, so tomorrow I move on to the
next three chapters of TY and the next audio example, which will be Unit 2. I attempted to make a video today of
my Arabic up to this point, but I am severely lacking in verbs to make a video of any length. I think I will wait a
couple of more weeks and then try again.

I am halfway through my Arabic cycle! Surprisingly, I nearly caught up my average to be at least an hour a day. I
feel like I am in a good place right now. I am beginning to understand more of what I hear and can string some
very basic sentences together. I was also able to read some of the headlines scrolling by on Al-Jazeera tonight.
My next CEFR self-evaluation is 15 days away and hopefully by that time I can cross most of A1 off. My current
projections tell me that I should get through my TY book by my final week of this cycle, although I will only be
on about Unit 7 with the TY audio. Still, if the progress I have recently been making can keep up I will be very
happy with where I end up at the end of this cycle.

I finished the first of my three chapters for the week in TY. As I get more into these chapters I am beginning to
realize that I will need to spend more time daily in order to get through them in a timely fashion, while still
trying to grasp as much as possible. Ultimately the real progress will come when I get to the writing portion of
my week. I forgot to watch Al-Jazeera today, however I fell asleep as it was and sitting in front of the TV for
twenty minutes probably would have resulted in another nap.

Today was just a bad studying day. I spent most of the evening either taking care of my bum knee or falling
asleep. I plan on getting more sleep during the day today than I have the last few days, so I should be recharged
to get more done than usual tonight.

Hi JPike, I would be interested to know how you feel FLR working out for you. I went and
got the TY books out of the library for Italian but couldn't find the audio. It looks a
good method though. Have you seen the gentleman on Youtube (there was a link on here
somewhere) who seems to have learnt Croatian to a good level in 3 months with this
method.
I am very impressed with your Arabic writing. I don't understand any of it but it looks
quite alien to me and I think a lot of credit is due to someone who manages to learn the
alphabet and characters - so well done!
