TV Japan is finally available in HD. It's pretty expensive and I was disappointed last summer when I got it
and found out it was SD only. Sweet. Apparently there was a problem with the dish which i hadn't used in
months (thanks to crunchyroll) and I was getting a message telling me at there wasn't any signal at least
when it was on the Japanese channel. They were going to charge me $95 to send a technician out. Ugh. I
asked about canceling my account and then they offered to send one for free. Great company right. I can't
believe they would expect anyone to pay that.

Anyway I got it working on my own... the dish wasn't pointed just so apparently finicky.

I can understand it much better than last time (whenever that was probably 3-4 months ago). I'll be checking
the programming and actually using this some I think =D. HD is nice and actually having a chance at
understanding is neat. There's never any subtitles so I can't cheat.

Well the HD channel is awesome. I still haven't fully explored the programing to set the DVR to record stuff
I'm really interested in. I just turn it on and watch whatever. Today was a bit of a let down. I did my
flashcards and got through a sentence deck for chapter 1-4 of Rosetta Stone and some vocab but there's
more vocab I didn't do and I haven't started in on some English -> Japanese cards yet... They're just sitting
there in the new pile. I'm watching Hell Girl disc 2 that's from Netflix that has been sitting on the table for a
while. My DVD plan has more DVDs than I really ever care to watch. I often copy them and send them back
without even seeing them. What a waste. Hell Girl disc 1 was fun. It's basically a bunch of short stories of
people victimized by nasty people. These victims then sell their soul to hell girl so that they can get revenge
on the perpetrators. And sweet revenge it is. The shows I watched didn't didn't really focus on the after math
of selling your soul to the devil so to speak. They talked about your going to hell but you didnt see it. You did
see the bad guys in hell getting their poetic justice. Good fun.

Also I'm downloading a jdrama recommended to me. Nodame Cantible. Some sort of love story I think. I've
only watched the 1st episode and frankly it was cheesy and I wouldn't be watching more if it weren't
recommended. I watched it streamed and the quality was atrocious. This torrent claims to be HD which
would be amazing compared to what I was watching.... Looked like it was filmed with a web cam from the
early 90's. Hmm looks like whatever nice person as seeding it with an actual connection logged off. Could be
2 weeks to download instead of 10 hours. Ugh.

I'm still on chapter 2 of harry potter but but almost done with that chapter. All my vocab from chapter 1 has
the text to speech instead of Rikai sama native voices so I haven't been studying them but it's been very
good for my vocabulary. I've learned stuff there and then heard it repeated again in animes. I'm sort of
clicking and adding every word I don't know though instead of stuff I know will be used often. Greedy I guess.

That's about it. I typed this on my iPad so I blame all typos on it's slow keyboard and strange auto spell
checker. I am thinking of grabbing the nexus 7 soon. Might preorder it tonight even. I like surfing on my
android phone I just wish the screen were a tad bigger and that it were dual core instead of whatever CPU it
has that's almost 2 years old. Nexus 7 looks nice and more portable friendly at 7 inches. Wonder if that's a
diagnol or horizontal measurement.

Well I ordered it. I hope it works out better than the kindle fire did which I kept a whole 20 minutes
before packing up to to be shipped back to amazon. It was too unresponsive for me - scrolling a
webpage was a lot slower than the ipad. This tablet has good reviews and should be responsive but I'm
also concerned about being able to type on it comfortably. I would say my phone is the best device
shirt of an actual keyboard for typing. I hope this 7 inch tablet works well too. If not ill have to just
upgrade my phone e I guess. That would cost more than this tablet though.

While we're on the subject of Rikaisama (sort of). I've noticed that some words don't have pronunciations, which isn't so strange since they can hardly be expected to record every word in the Japanese language. What strikes me as funny is that some of these are incredibly common words.

But that's not important -- just an observation. The thing I've found troublesome is that some words can have more than one pronunciation. They only seem to do the one at the top of the list. Sometimes I know the first one isn't the right word, but that it should be the second word on the list. Do you know a way to get it to go down the list?

Not really. I've not been using it that long yet though. My best work around is to look up the word on
another website like jisho and then click on the word with its correct kanji. Usually the words you're
describing are written in kana or it wouldn't be showing the wrong one, so clicking on the kanji helps
bump the right one to the top of the list.

I suppose I could look it up on another site, but I don't really feel like going to all that trouble. It's not really important; I just thought it would be nice to know if there was a way to do it.

Here is an example of what I meant by it giving the wrong pronunciation:

正しく
They give it as まさしく, but in the sentence I was reading, it should have been the adverb form of ただしい, which was the second word on the list. The problem could also come up where there are two separate words after each other that could look like one word.

I sometimes think my japanese is getting pretty good and it's almost caught up to my German and
spanish... Then I'll learn a word like I did a few days ago that is just really basic. This word was
"obvious" or 明らか.

I was just thinking as I watch some anime (hikaru no go again), and craving junk food mostly because I'm
bored, that learning a foreign language is a lot like going on a diet. The gains are really slow and it takes a lot
of will power and most people don't follow through.
