Ha! I don't do any. I am just greedy about knowing vocabulary. I forget what context it was used in the book. Anyway, I'm gonna learn it. This word is not going to get me down. I will probably be more hesitant about adding words later as my Spanish list gets bigger but this word.. I will know.

I'm finding there's plenty of Spanish vocab that doesn't want to stick in my head either. Alcochar for example (if I'm remembering it right) which means to quilt.

Do you do a lot of quilting? It's certainly not a word I need every day.

Thankfully I'm feeling motivated again today XD.

I was watching a new Anime on Crunchyroll called Problem Children are Coming from Another World, aren't they? and it's got me back into wanting to learn. It's not a super good anime but it's fun and the 1st episode is interesting at least. You never know how long a new show will stay interesting but so far so good.

So I'm watching it and I'm thinking.. I -WANT- the Japanese subs for this. Or some other anime I like. So I spent the past hour trying to find the subs to a Japanese anime. I stumbled onto this website. http://anidb.net and it's pretty awesome but I haven't been able to get any subs in Japanese yet. The yahoo post that directed me to the site said to look for groups that released anime with Japanese subs (this site shows the languages). Not very many do release them with the Jap subs but some are. At least per the site. Again, I haven't gotten my hands on any yet. I am currently sitting in an IRC channel for one of these groups and reading the FAQ on how to download and pretty much all they say is that acting stupid gets you banned. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now so I anticipate getting banned if I speak up. Argh.

If I could get my hands on the japanese subs I could make a vocab deck and really get into the series. I suppose I could listen closely and make my own subs or vocab too. It would be slow going. Then again I'm not getting very far this way either.

Makes me want to give up and go back to just reading Potter which I was lucky enough to find online. Anime would be so much more fun though.

Yeah I'm finding it hard to get my focus back on Japanese right now too. It's happened before, and I know it will pass!

Class starts tomorrow. So far it's not cancelled so they'd have to do it last minute and I think we're safe. I found a new anime series on Crunchy that I'm addicted to - and I'm late getting into it so there's a lot of episodes to watch XD. I love that. It's called Pandora Hearts. Fun Fantasy action goodness.

I can really see German or Spanish being a big distraction and reducing my Japanese progress. I am signed up for the courses and I'm going to go to the 1st class to see what it's like but I'm leaning towards dropping German and Spanish and just keeping the Japanese course. Oh yeah I signed up for German too. I realize 3 courses at once would be too much but I couldn't make my mind up between German and Spanish.

I'm back to doing my flashcards the hard way, but only one deck. Side 1 is the audio for the target Japanese word. I write the word using the kanji or katakana and furigana for all kanji. Side 2 is just the hiragana/katakana. And then side 3 is the English. I seem to flip flop around in how I do vocab. I think what I was doing before with 2 decks wasn't pushing my kanji enough. This method is definitely slower but much more thorough. And I find it more engaging (at last at the moment).

I stayed up until 2:30 am watching anime (I have to wake up at 4:50 am for work). So I'm tired right now. I wonder how many other people abuse themselves as much as I do regarding sleep. I bet it's taking years off my life.

I doubt it's taking years off your life, but it's probably adding years on to how long it will take you to learn Japanese! :)

I used to have terrible sleep habits, and I'm still much more of a night owl than an early bird (there is no way I could accept a job with a 4.50am start), however once I noticed how much of an impact sleep had on my day to day performance, I got a lot better at sending myself to bed at a reasonable time!

I guess part of the motivation for signing up to German and Spanish was the uncertainty over the future of your Japanese class? I guess there's no easy answer to that one. Will you get your money back if you don't continue with the classes? I opted to pay for my French class by installments so I have to send them another £100 this month even though I'm not going any more. It's annoying.

You have to keep paying for French still? I mean... our semester ended in December. I can still get my money back for either German or Spanish since our semester is just starting. There's a deadline soon when I won't but you can go to the 1st two classes I think and still drop and get a refund. I have German tomorrow night. I don't know what I'll do.

My Japanese started tonight. It was fun. I hadn't reviewed any grammar from last semester so I hadn't looked at it in over a month. I have plowed ahead into the coming chapters some though. We have a couple of Chinese students studying abroad at the University taking it. I'm pretty curious about how well they'll do. This class is very heavy on using English for explanations and translations of the Japanese. The teacher is Japanese and speaks as much Japanese as possible in the class but the language problems involve a lot of English. If we can't translate something into English to his satisfaction then we need to study more. I can't tell how strong these Chinese students' English is yet - they didn't participate much. We also have a couple students who took 202 last spring retaking it - I'm not sure if they're a couple or just friends or what but one of them is going to Japan and this course is pretty much the most advanced course around unless you want to pay real university tuition. I'm hoping they bring a lot and the teacher gives us more challenging work with them around.

So I am curious about what German will be like. I am pretty sure it'll be so easy I'll not want to take it but I don't know. I was talking to myself last night in German (instead of sleeping) and Spanish and I could say a lot. When it came to Japanese it wasn't as easy. I can talk some but I can't spit out long complex sentences at all.

Oh regarding sleep. I know that I learn better with more sleep. I've posted about it in the past. I need more discipline unfortunately. Sometimes I'll get on a roll and go to bed earlyish regularly but then I'll mess it up.

Hopefully I'll turn it around.

Anyway. I'm debating what to do with my Flash cards. I was intending to try pure audio and drawing the kanji etc. It's a bit slow. There's no way I'll be adding new cards to my deck anytime soon if I do it this way. An alternative is to try something else... I was thinking of doing kanji (no audio) side 1 and then side 2 has the audio and well everything - English/kana etc. I haven't tried studying Japanese this way for any length of time believe it or not. I think it's how most students do it. And if I get caught up in my reviews on this I could break out a 2nd deck to practice drawing/writing the words out with full kanji etc.

I think I'm going to do it this way. Writing kanji I think is going to have to take a back seat to understanding and reading it.

Try doing things backwards and setting an alarm to go to sleep. Set the alarm for half an hour before you want to go to bed and when it rings, stop what you're doing and get ready for bed. I've never tried it myself, but it might work as long as you don't hit the snooze button.

I am gonna update quick before work. I went to the German class and it was a ton of fun. It's so different
than the Japanese class I was a bit shocked. Teachers can really get into the language a lot faster with
European languages. I'm ahead of the students by a lot and I'm very rusty so I think the gap will get bigger
but as long as we're speaking German I don't mind. And i may not study too hard for the class anyway.

I am not doing Spanish after all. I guess I chose German because the class started sooner so I went to it
first. I'll take Spaniis col another time. And I'll still finish Crepúsculo however.

I'm having a hell of a time keeping the languages separate. I wouldn't say I mix them while talking really.
Except for hai. I was saying that left and right in German. Paul? Hai! (to self... Damnit... Stop saying hai in
German class!) and then after class and the next day and 30 min into japanese... I was thinking in German
quite a bit. It seems easy to turn my brain onto German but it's a bit harder for Japanese. I am going to try
harder to think in Japanese going forward... I think I did that I. German back in the day. And it helped.

Japanese
