I would love to go to such a conference, even if I don't consider myself a polyglot -- just a simple language learner. If it takes place somewhere within my reach and I can afford the journey, I'll certainly attend it.
EDIT: It would be great if Prof. Arguelles could be there, or maybe Michael Erard could talk about Babel No More (Okay, that's more likely for the conference in the US, I think). I would certainly be interested in a USA-based conference. Hopefully in a few years I could attend an international one as well.

I think a conference for polyglots and L2 acquisition is an excellent idea. The organizers could invite
academicians, linguists and organizations involved in the study of languages. We could have presentations from organizations and individuals which would interest language enthusiasts such as SIL and noted polyglots. Language and cultural promotion organizations such as Alliance Frances and Instituto Cervantes and companies like Berlitz and Assimil could help sponsor the event or at least exhibit at booths at the conference. Embassies and consulates can sent representatives that can natively speak their national language which you can practice your language skills with. This conference can also be a venue for polyglots to showcase their skills, or be rated by native speaking language experts. Contests can even be organized to be part of the program. Isn't the search for the world's best polyglot something that can capture public attention? Count me in to pitch in help in organizing if ever you plan to hold anywhere near my part of the world, which will be Southwest China for the next few years. I guess though that North America or Europe might be a better place to hold such a conference at this time. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

I really like the idea of such a conference (I would consider going to one if it is held somewhere central in Europe). While I can see the need for sponsorship as mentioned by Duke100782, I would nevertheless warn against the danger of turning such a conference into a commercial event. It would beg the question of whether to open up for any company that may wish to come and "sell" or to favour certain companies over others.
I have no problem with letting polyglots show what they can, but personally I would not be attracted by a contest. For me the real value of such a conference would be to hear some serious (not in the meaning of "boring", but "enlightening") presentations and speeches by serious language learners and polyglots, and not least to meet and discuss with other people with the same interest in all things language-related as I. 1 person has voted this message useful |
