I'm planning to do a relatively low-budget trip to Italy later this year. So far I've not booked everything, but my flight to Rome cost me under £30 (although this is from Greece, which I'm paying just over £30 to fly to) and my flight back from Milan will be just over that. For accommodation I'll probably go for some combination of Couchsurfing/hostels/AirBnB. Hostels in Rome are quite cheap, I've seen dorms from around £15 (although the cheapest tend to be "party hostels" which I'd rather avoid; if I wanted to get wasted with a bunch of English-speakers I'd just stay at home!) and double rooms from around £50. If there are two of you, apartments/AirBnB might be cheaper than a double room in a hostel/hotel.
I suppose the point is that it might be a lot cheaper if you look at the flights, accommodation, etc. individually rather than as a "city break" package. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

If you look on hostelworld or hostelbookers, you can get a dorm room for between 8 and 20 euros a night. I personally would be looking to spend no more than about 15 euros for a room.
Search ryanair or easyjet from all london airports, obviously avoid the summer holidays and flying on weekends etc. and you should be able to find ultracheap flights. You could travel for more than a month on £400 in many parts of the world. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I don't have experience with Experia, but lastminutedeals is probably the worst way to find anything during the summer months. Tickets are already at their most expensive right now if you're looking to travel anytime before late September or October. Have you tried different dates (I know you don't get all that much choice with lastminutedeals)? If I travel in late September, I can usually find tickets for less - round-trip from Chicago. What do you think of spending your time in a smaller city? Unless you're in some sort of resort, accommodations might well be cheaper. Not only that, you might find yourself in a place where locals are less likely to practice their English on you.

Avoid crowded cities,

Can't you get a coach down to Italy from the UK? My dad used to just drive it.
Try a different day booking the flights. When I booked my flights to Australia I decided to wait 2 months simply because it was £200+ cheaper for the tickets. Try this website: www.statravel.co.uk Last minute I found was expensive. So I used STA. Also either try to get hostels pre-booked or arrange the couch surfing thing above if your comfortable with that. 1 person has voted this message useful |
