I visited Iceland a couple of years ago, but didn't feel ready to make it into a monolingual holiday. In some cases I did speak Icelandic (which apparently came as a surprise for those targeted), in others situations I spoke Danish or even English, but I tried to think as much as possible in Icelandic and I also tried to translate my conversations into Icelandic in my mind - of course with lots of holes and even more errors.

The video is in the box now, but I doubt that it will get many viewers - I decided to go through all my languages in one long row, and then I didn't feeel like doing a summary on top of all the rest. However I have written extensively about the book in this thread here at HTLAL so it is not really a secret that I find it interesting. However in the last sentences of the video - those in Indonesian - I do profer my wish that we get one more book with more biographical stuff and maybe something about the methods used by different hyperpolyglots, insofar they can explain what they do.

I just watched your video, Iversen, and I have to say that from the bits and pieces I could understand, it seems like this book covers a wide range of topics, and you definitely got me interested in reading it. I'm very impressed by your easy switching between languages, too!

Please also read the stuff in the thread here at HTLAL - that's where you get the things in a form which I have had time to think through. In the video it is was mostly a matter of surviving without saying too much rubbish - after all half the languages were not among those I normally claim to speak (and the final goodbye in Irish was just a prelearned quote from a language I never have tried to speak).

VIA MULTILINGUA VIDEO PRI "BABEL NO MORE"

My mother had to buy a new digital receiver for her satellite, because all the analog programs on the Astra satellites will stop April 30 - and until then there are broad horizontal bands across the screen on analog channels to force people to buy the new equipment well before the deadline. So I spend the weekend drawing up a complete list of all her new channels - and there are hundreds of them! But it turns out that she only needs to search through two series of channels with all in all slightly above 30 channels - she can ignore the rest. Well, everybody can ignore the informercial channels (who watches that sick rubbish?), the God, Sports and Pop channels and the endless row of German local channels - which may have good programs, but who can deal with so many programs? I noticed that in the high end of the numbers there are a lot of Spanish, French and Polish channels, plus single channels in Portuguese, Italian and Catalan (my good old and sorely missed TV3!). Where I live I only have cable (apart from the internet channels), and even though it once was a big step forward it now feels like a totally antiquated technology where other people can force me to buy packets of junk channels before I'm allowed to supplement with the channels I want - and only from a group of channels preselected by people with quite different agendas.
