Ok, my German studies has come to a temporary pause....
All because of these @#$@!@$%%# Hanjas. I don't support studying Hanja to study Korean. And yet, I HAVE to learn them to be considered "educated" or "intellectual". Plus, SNU uses them in their intervies apparently. Currently I'm studying with two books, 生活漢字 and 한자능력검정시험 2급. In Korea we have Hanja exams and there are 8 Levels, Level 1 being the highest. I've finished studying Hanja under Levels 8 and 7, so I'm going through Hanja for Level 6, given in the second book that I use. I already know a lot of Hanja for Level 6 through my Mandarin studies and my studies with 生活漢字, so I'm only focusing on the ones I don't know yet. My first book is good for learning characters for Sino-Korean words, but not for learning raw Hanja, which is why I'm using both books now. Today I'm using the 2nd book. Hanja are the ideographs that Korean adopted from Chinese. They aren't used nearly as frequently as Kanji is in Japanese (or as Hanzi is in Chinese obviously), but they are still present in some forms of media.

I'm practicing hanja now by writing the hanja for Korean newspaper headlines.
I find recognizing the characters isn't so difficult but remembering how to write them is a real pain. Having a Teflon memory doesn't help. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

As Warp3 correctly explains, Hanja refers to the Chinese characters used in Korea. We don't use them as extensively as Japanese or Chinese do, and in fact, you don't use them in everyday language, including most of literature. However, it is like the hallmark of a civilised and educated person, and one of universities I got into requires that we learn 2100 characters for graduation. As it is closely related to my native language, and I like the Chinese characters anyway, I decided to just study around 1000 of them in advance. :) 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I'm also learning Mandarin so I'm forced to learn simplified characters but because I
have partly a Cantonese background I also must learn traditional characters. In addition, I feel the need to learn the old Vietnamese character or 즈놈. Chinese characters are hard for many but most eventually get there. Good luck with your 한자 studies :P 1 person has voted this message useful |
