Thanks for your review, geoffw.
I got my copy yesterday and have only read a couple of pages here and there. As long as the Yiddish is grammatically correct, I am ok with a -not too big- amount "umgelumpertkayt". I can read Yiddish but I'm still not at the point where I can really appreciate what could be broadly called "style" so the "umgelumpertkayt" will probably go unnoticed by me. Of course it would be better to immerse oneself in Sholem Aleichem's, Perets' and Mendele's works to develop a taste for what is "good" Yiddish but, keeping the "umgelumpertkayt" in mind, if I find Der Hobit a pleasant read, that's enough for me. On a more positive note, the Yidishe Heftn of this month also had an article on the book. Nothing is said about the quality of the translation (though I suspect it might be because nobody read it).
