I think sentence mining is when you look through various texts: example sentences from dictionaries, sentences from novels, or conversations you hear, or song lyrics, or back of cereal boxes, etc - anything that exposes you to the real language or whatever your target is - while always on the prowl for new words and expressions AND their context they came in.
It's like learning every new word you find, but keeping it within in its context to help you learn the nuances of that word/expression.
That's how I've always understood it.
