Could anyone please tell me: is the book used for the FSI Saudi course, the one by Margaret K. Omar (also known as Margaret Nydell)? :-)

Yes, the FSI Saudi Arabic (Urban Hijazi Dialect) Basic Course is by Margaret K. Omar. (I don't know anything about the Nydell connection, but the Omar name is on the first page, and a note from the Dean of the FSI language school makes it clear that the course is primarily her work.)

I have both books for the FSI MSA course (Modern Written Arabic Vol. I + II). Actually, they're not too hard to find used. I have the time and patience to scan them in, but I don't have a scanner at the moment. I've actually been planning to buy the tapes for Modern Written Arabic from the NTIS for future use, but if there's a chance I can get the audio from another member, I'd rather spend the same money on a scanner and/or a different FSI course from the NTIS. |

I realize this is an old thread, but I just wanted to add that I'll be getting a scanner tomorrow and I'll be able to scan in the books for the FSI Modern Written Arabic course. I've never scanned anything in before, but how difficult could it be? Does anyone know how long this kind of job takes? I'll be using a Canon CanoScan Scanner (LiDE 60) with USB 2.0.

Great, Malcolm. Scanning a page with text can take you less than 4 minutes and maybe even less. Thank you and braveb for such altruism. We all will appreciate it. Don t you know about anybody with the Hijazi FSI coure?

I recently acquired a new scanner and it's much faster than my old one. Most of the newer USB 2.0 scanners should be able to do the page in 20 seconds or less.

I've been playing around with the new scanner and it's pretty easy to use. It can scan a page in under 10 seconds, but if you include the time required to preview the image first then crop it, as well as the time required to position the book on the scanner and turn the pages, it probably averages to 30 seconds per page. This seems reasonable to me.
So far, I've scanned the introduction and the first lesson and made them into pdf files. I also have braveb's mp3 for the first lesson. If anyone wants these from me, just let me know.

Ok, it seems my approximation of the scanning time was a bit overrated. This is due to the rather older age of my scanner. Well, Malcolm, could it be possibly up-loaded to http://fsi-language-courses.com/ ? I am definetly interested in the progress of your cooperation with braveb. Thank you both again for your effort.
