I would suggest French for Reading by Sandberg and Tatham as a grammar book to supplement Assimil. It's a very thorough grammar book. And it teaches also a lot of French vocabulary.
What concerns French grammar, the second Assimil book (the English version is called Using French) is also rather informative (for instance about a very peculiar usage of beau that I a was unable to find any information about in other more 'mainstream' grammar books.)
