I've heard of Subs2srs. But it seems like it would take a lot of time to generate flashcards for those, especially without Anki. Plus, I don't have the slightest clue about how I would hook up my TV to my PC, transfer dramas, then extract the captioning from them.

With my reader still not yet being shipped out, I went to the school library today after our term-closing ceremony. I talked to the school librarian about any good books available there to help me out with my Half Super Challenge. (Of course I didn't say it like that. She has no idea what a Half Super Challenge is.) As always, she was very helpful. She has a good idea about my Japanese level, since I taught her a few English lessons last year, using the Japanese that I know. She lent me a children's book called おじいちゃんの大切な一日. I don't know what the story is about, but I do know that it is not way over my head, but challenging enough that I should pick up a lot of new vocabulary and kanji from it. In addition, she says that, unlike manga and some 小説, this book has nice, proper Japanese, which I should learn first.
Now, if you are asking why there are children's books at my high school... don't ask. Let's just say that my students are, well, academically-challenged. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Today I had some extra free time at school, so I started reading おじいちゃんの大切な一日(Grandfather's Important Day). I said before that it's a children's book, but actually it's half children's book, half short novel. Most of the book, which is about B5-paper size, has pictures on one side and all words on the other, but often there will be nothing but words on both open pages.
The first chapter, minus pictures, is about 5 pages. I found a staggering 25 new words/kanji/grammar items just on Page 1! As has been my custom the last couple of months, I typed the sentences containing the new word into Mnemosyne, then searched for definitions online to add. As you can imagine, with 25 new items to add, this became tedious. So tedious, in fact, that I just finished the chapter without bothering to add any more new items. On the way home, I started to wonder if SRSing sentences (hold your breath) is even worth the trouble. Had I not had that free time, I wouldn't have been able to do much. Surely time could have been saved by just adding single words or short phrases, and I might have enjoyed the book more. Add that to the fact that I think SRSing sentences is a bit boring. I know the guy at AJATT suggests deleting boring cards, which would mean 90% of my deck. He also suggests just adding memorable sentences. But I don't read memorable material. The material I find memorable (non-fiction books) are beyond my level. On the other hand, when I was SRSing single words last year, it was strangely fun. I thought of it as a rapid fire game. See the word, recall the meaning, BAM, grade it and move on. Watch 80 words fly by! And I retained words at least as well as I do using sentences. And even though they were out of context in the SRS, when I did come across the words in my daily life I had no problems. In short, I'm seriously considering going back to (mostly) single words or collocations. Of course, with grammar you need to have a card with a sentence. But doing single words seems to be more fun, saves time, and doesn't really cause any problems that can't be corrected by reading a lot and getting a lot of L2 exposure. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Are there any movies you really like and know by heart? If so, you can just download subs2srs and use subtitles from subscene.com to create a bunch of flashcards. You can select the language filter here http://subscene.com/filter?returnUrl=%2f You don't even have to use the subtitles to watch movies or anything, if you know the movie well you can just dive straight into working through the flashcards you've created. 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

I agree, short phrases is the way to go. Maybe if there's a new word you've found, but it's in a really long sentence, you can create your own example sentence for it? That might even help you remember the word better. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Hmmm... I'm once again rethinking this. I just did a Mnemosyne session. I have sentences in my Esperanto deck, and those are interesting items to review, much more than single Esperanto words. However, the Japanese sentences seem boring. emk made a suggestion to me in another thread to get sentences from other sources. That might be the problem for me. While the book I'm reading seems to be interesting, the individual sentences are not. I'll probably do what I did before: jot down the words, and later on find some interesting sentences from other sources like Google or Tatoeba.org and add them into Mnemosyne. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||
