My goals have changed mostly because I've made some good gains in French and Russian.

My current goal is to get a B2 diploma in French and to get to a solid B1 in Russian,
although eventually my goals are

French/German C1
Russian B2
Swedish B1

- for now. When I achieve those then I might move onwards from there, since eventually C1
is the only thing I find close to sufficient. C2 is better but I rather have more at C1
than less at C2 :)

My goals from 31 Dec 2008:
"I think it's about time to activate my German - I've mostly been reading and listening for quite some time now. Nothing wrong with that, but I don't want to feel like a complete idiot if/when I meet native speakers and barely can keep a basic conversation.

I'd like to take my other languages to the level where my German was a year ago (so, still an idiot in those... :D)."

My German is better now, as is my Spanish, but other than that I still want my target languages to improve a level (whether that's from A1 to A2, B1 to B2 etc.)

My goals have changed in two ways:

1) Now that I've realized how much work is involved in getting a language to a useful level, the total number of languages I intend to learn has dropped to a more attainable level. I would still love to learn many of the languages that I've since dropped from my hit list, but I now realize how much time it would take to add them back in and I'd rather concentrate that time on a smaller list instead.

2) My initial goal for Korean was rather simple: I wanted to "learn Korean". (More specifically, I wanted to learn an east Asian language and Korean is the one that caught my attention at the time, so the goal became "Learn Korean" instead.) Now that I'm 3 years into that process, I've realized that I don't really have a target. "Learn Korean" isn't a specific enough goal to ever claim as a success, so now I've found myself trying to figure out what my actual goal with Korean should be. I'm so hooked in with Korean media now (music, TV, etc.) that not continuing with Korean seems unthinkable at this point, but I don't really have a goal other than "learn more". That "goal" seems to have worked so far, but eventually I may have a find an actual target to keep myself motivated to stay in "learn more" mode for such an extended period. For the time being, I've got weekly goals in the TAC to strive toward which helps a lot, but I still feel that I need an overall end goal to strive for with this language.

My initial language goals for the 2010 TAC were to reach B2 level in German, French and Russian, and if time permitted, maybe also fit in some Irish as well.

Now fast-forward to 2012 and my goals are...well...still pretty much the same. The only big difference is that I've now added Hawaiian and Japanese to the list, as I'd be a fool to waste all the great immersion opportunities in these two languages whilst living in Honolulu over the next few years.

In the time since joining the forum, I've managed to reach my initial goal in German, rise from A1+ to B1 in Russian, and finally get around to starting some Irish as well as some other languages. I shelved French after my wife and I learnt we wouldn't be moving to Geneva, but it's still firmly in my study sights further down the line.

And even though I feel disheartened at times about my snail's pace progress, especially when life throws so many obstacles in the way, I realise I'm still getting there... Every minute of listening and reading, watching tv, or even using the few words I have with waiters in a restaurant, brings me a stride closer to completing my language goals. I've learned so much already by sharing my experiences on this forum and talking to other fellow travellers, and continue to look forward to sharing the journey ahead and one day writing that I've completed all my goals and am ready to start a new list. ;)

Well, since I joined a few months ago, my goals have not really changed.

-I am hoping to achieve a C2 in Portuguese. I project that I'll be at about a C1 level after another year of consistent studying.
-I'd love at least a C1 in Hebrew and Turkish at some point. I have yet to decide which language I'll study first (after Portuguese). I'm captivated by Hebrew because I'd like to have another Semitic language under my belt (and because I like the language itself). Turkish entered my life almost a decade ago, reached about a B1 level, and want to improve that greatly.
-I'd like to reach an A2 or (possibly) a B1 in Pashto. As you can tell, I have a ton of interest in languages of the Middle East.

Over the past five years however, my goals have definitely changed. In 2006, I wasn't even interested in Portuguese. I always viewed it as too close to Spanish. Yet now I am enthralled by the language, and have realized that my initial assumption was inaccurate. Also, when I started French, I only had the intention of reaching a B2, but then I discovered some aspects of French culture and literature that fascinated me and made me go through C1 and what I now consider a low C2. I also am now interested in Catalan and Romanian for later on.

In 2006, I had no knowledge of indigenous languages such as Garifuna, Miskito, Pech, (all from my work and trips to Honduras), and Aymara (from Bolivia). Now, despite the scarce resources, these languages are on my hit list. Same goes for two Semitic languages: Amharic and Tigrinya.

Fifteen years ago, I didn't really care for smaller languages (aside from Guarani) - small for me was under 20 million speakers. Nowadays, I am insanely curious about such languages, and better appreciate that languages - no matter how big or small - are gateways to their respective cultures.

I have been on the forum for more than 5 years, 3 years very active, and the past two years merely lurking on and off.

My language goals have definitely changed. Initially I wanted basic understanding in many languages, because learning new languages felt like collecting stamps or coins to me.. like a hobby you can show off to other people.

Then I met this forum, and felt that I wanted to be at an advanced level in English, German and Spanish, the primary aim being to be able to appreciate literature of different languages.

Recently my aims have changed, as language learning has been placed lower on my list of priorities, after sociology and music. I want to be able to read academic sociological materials in German, acquire basic fluency in Spansh, and reach intermediate stage in many other languages such as Italian, Hindi Japanese, Hebrew, Welsh and Arabic so that I can understand what songs in these languages mean.
