I really don't know what I want for christmas. I have everything I need, and the rest is
stuff I will have to buy on my own anyway, so I just enjoy the time with the family and
my way to cute niece :) What would be nice is the collection of Harry Potter books. That
I would really enjoy. But besides that, nothing material. Unless I could get my hands on
the machine they use in the Matrix movies to learn stuff.

I would like a swarm of nanobots as described by paranday in an unrelated thread.

In Japan Christmas has been bastardized to a point where it is actually quite depressing for Westerners (or for me, at least)!
From the beginning of December decorations and lights start to appear, and they are usually quite beautiful and put me in a nice Christmassy mood, but from then on things take a sharp turn for the worse.
Throughout December people throng to the two Disney resorts to watch the Xmas displays. Two years ago I had the misfortune to attend and it depressed the hell out of me with its fake jollity and crass commercialism.
Then December the 24th is the big night, where dads bring home Kentucky Fried Chicken (in place of the turkey) and a strawberry sponge cake from 7/11 (in place of Christmas cake) and young couples go out to restaurants for a romantic dinner followed by a bout of lovemaking at one of Japan's notoriously tacky love hotels. On the morning of the 25th all decorations have been taken down, everyone goes to work as normal, and almost no-one even knows that the 25th is actually Christmas Day.
I always think I should endeavour to get myself back to Europe for Xmas, but then I remember the expensive flights, limited services, cold, dark days and even colder, darker nights, family feuds, crass commercialism, and excessive consumption of a British Xmas.
Bah humbug...

I would definitely go for that, except I do not think my husband would be too thrilled. A few weeks back I met a Russian who actually offered his services, making the point of how it was the best method to learn the language. Given that he was short, ugly, lacked four teeth and smelled of vodka, I decided that although I am dedicated to my language learning , I wasn't quite that dedicated. And again, there is the slight case of the unthrilled husband.
There is nothing I want right now as for as study material go. A year off to get through them might be nice though. :-)
As for Christmas, in Norway we have a family dinner on the 24th after which we exchange presents. We usually have more snow than we can handle, and visit as many of our relatives as we can over the holidays.

Simpatico and patient Portuguese-speaking contacts who will help me *finally* become more proficient in Portuguese.

I've asked Santa if I could have a Sony PRS 650, so I can put all my ebooks on it and take notes in the library without being able to go on FB! Some real books too, mainly for my dissertation, but also to learn more about Linguistics. Finally, some warm socks, a couple of scarves and a lot of chocolate for Russia next February :)

I've requested Pimsleur Basic Egyptian Arabic for Pakjesavond. Three more days and I'll know if Sinterklaas encourages language learning.
As for Christmas, in my opinion it can't come and go fast enough. For some reason people out here feel the need to stretch out that dreadful holiday for another day, which is very originally called "Second Christmas day".
