"Latvians disliked the fact that their country
was occupied."
What does "occupy" mean/ It was not more occupied by the Soviet Union than Russia.
"Tens of
thousands of Latvians were sent to Siberia to die and you are wondering why Latvians
disliked the Soviet Union??? "
Much more Russians were executed or imprisoned in the same conditions. Some of them were
guilty, many were innocent, yet the Soviet Union is not fully rejected by them. Do
Russians in Latvia the same as Latvians? They were in the same situation.
Anyway, it doesn't excuse the treatment of Russian speakers in Latvia. They did not
occupy anyone and suffered as much as Latvians.

"If they want to get university education, they should be able to learn Latvian too. In
fact, many of the students I've studied with have been Russian and not a single one of
them has expressed anger or anything like that over the fact that there are no Russian
universities in Latvia. Educated Latvians and Russians usually get along very well."
They have to have a right that they used to have. High education through Russian was
forcefully abandonned in Latvia. The problem is not only in learning Latvian but also in
the respect towards the people whose mothertongue is Russian. There is high education in
other European languages which is total disrespect towards Russian speakers.

"The Latvians feel that way, they don't need any proof because by then it would be too
late. And I'm not sure why you think you know better if you don't live in Latvia."
The main threat to the Latvian language is emigration and depopulation.

The difference is that in Canada both languages have the official status, while widely-
spoken Russian doesn't have any status, even regional.

In Québec, French is the only official language.

The major difference is that neither of these languages are in danger. Even if English
takes over in Canada, French will still be spoken in France. Even if French takes over in
Canada, English will still be spoken in GB and other places.
In contrast, if Russian takes over Latvian in Latvia then Latvian will become extinct.
That's why Latvians are so protective of their language.

The French spoken in Europe and in Québec have been separated for 400 years and Québec is the only state left in North America where French is still spoken by a majority of people. We don't really care if French is still spoken in France, it's irrelevant. We are trying to protect our language on our territory, just as you are in Latvia. One major difference is that Latvia is an independent state and has full control over all of its laws, which is not the case of Québec.
I'm not arguing over who's in worst shape (!), but your reply was a little too dismissive.
