I agree that negative votes would just scare many people away from voicing their opinions. Seeing as the useful button means "like/agree/support" to many people, I think having a useless button could turn rather ugly. I've seen people receive more than 30 votes for the same post. Imagine receiving that many negative votes for one of your posts. I, for one, would be quite upset.
I would really like to be able to see who voted for my posts but that's purely out of curiosity.

Yup. Already a lot of posts get voted "useful" when they're just telling an unpopular member to shut up. (And I'm not just talking about myself here.)

What about a youtube-style thumbs up, thumbs down system?

Thumbs up for that suggestion. :) I think that many of the "Useful" votes are in fact just "thumbs up" in disguise.

Journeyer votes "no" to negative votes. That's asking for trouble.
I don't know if I like the thumbs-up idea. I guess it's a question of taste though, I don't have any real opposition to it.
I think seeing who voted for who would be kinda cool. Maybe the voter could have an optional button: "I found this helpful and I'm not ashamed to admit it" kinda thing.
